They Poisoned My Voice So She Could Steal My Future, Not Knowing I Already Chose a Different One Chapter 07

Commander Thorne grunted. “Espionage and identity fraud. She’s going away for a very long time.”

“What about your parents?” Captain Walsh asked, taking back the tablet. “Even if you wanted to forgive them, the federal charges won’t be dropped.”

I closed my eyes, picturing their greedy, stupid faces.

Forget it. Whatever bond we had is over. I don’t need to keep chasing after their love anymore.

“And Buck and the old woman?”

“We found a lot more on them. They’ve been running women for over twenty years. At least fifteen victims, some driven insane, some dead.”

“If it weren’t for this case, God knows how much longer they would have kept getting away with it.”

I nodded, and the weight I’d been carrying finally lifted. True, they’d only trafficked me, but at least this operation had brought down their whole ring.

They’d likely get the death penalty.

I leaned back against my pillow and let out the first genuine smile I’d had in days.

At least I’d done some good. I’d helped save all those other people they’d kidnapped and sold.

Captain Walsh shifted in her seat. “Your parents are still claiming this is a domestic dispute. They want to see you. They think if you drop it, it’ll all go away.”

I opened my eyes and threw off the covers. “I’m fine. I want to see them myself.”

At the Federal Joint Counterintelligence Facility, I stood in my field uniform behind a one-way mirror.

On the other side were three interrogation rooms. Richard, Margaret, and Sophia Carson, each in a separate room.

Commander Thorne stood next to me and flipped a switch.

In Richard’s room, I heard his angry voice. “I’ve told you people a hundred times! It’s a misunderstanding!”

“Emily didn’t want to go to college, so Sophia went! That’s totally normal where we come from!”

“Fine, I’ll give you the acceptance letter back. Can’t you just let Sophia go?”

The federal agent questioning him stared back with cold contempt. “Mr. Carson, do you think this is a grocery store? You can just come and go?”

“Do you have any idea that the photo your daughter posted online has already been picked up by foreign intelligence services?”

Richard froze. “What intelligence services… don’t scare me with that nonsense! My oldest daughter is a student there! She’ll destroy you if you touch us!”

I laughed softly. It was rich. They throw me to the wolves, and now they want me to save them.

In the next room, Margaret was on her knees, clutching the leg of an interrogation chair.

“Please, officer! We didn’t know it was a federal place!”

“Sophia is just eighteen! She’s just a kid! Don’t ruin her life!”

“Take me! I gave my daughter the drugs! It was my idea!”

My mother cried with such sincere anguish, playing the part of a mother willing to sacrifice herself for her daughter.

But I knew better. She was just gambling.
