I answered immediately, missing the complex expression that crossed Liam’s face.

A few days later, I had slowly begun to adapt to the rhythm of life in Cambridge. There was no six a.m. assembly, no endless physical training, no strict hierarchy of greetings. I could wear whatever I wanted and walk along the Charles River. I could sit in the library late at night, reading architectural history until the sun came up.

On the phone, Sarah’s voice was so excited it was practically screaming.

“Elara! You’re a legend at West Point! The final academic honor roll came out, and your name is right at the top! Everyone is losing their minds. No one can believe the girl who was always just scraping by was secretly a straight-A student!”

I calmly twirled the drafting pencil in my hand. “It’s just the truth.”

“The truth? It’s a bombshell!” Sarah shouted. “And Isabelle Davenport! The Honor Committee officially recommended her for expulsion! Her Stanford exchange is gone, everything! I heard General Davenport almost had a stroke.”

“I’m not surprised,” I said.

I had submitted the evidence to protect myself, not for revenge. I needed a clean record to start my new life at MIT. What happened to Isabelle after that was simply the consequence of her own actions.
