His Smokescreen Is Now the Woman He Can’t Have Chapter 27

Of course he didn’t know where Elara was. Boston had so many universities, and he didn’t even know which program she was in.

But so what?

He would search school by school. Harvard, MIT, Boston University… even if he had to turn the entire city upside down, he would find her.

At the same time, in a student apartment in Boston, I jolted awake, my forehead slick with cold sweat.

It was that dream again.

After my father was dismissed, I had stayed with relatives. On a freezing winter night, my cousins, calling me “the child of a traitor,” locked me outside. The wind was brutal, and I could hear their faint laughter through the door. That night had become a nightmare I could never quite escape.

I gasped for breath, slowly coming back to myself.

This wasn’t West Point.

This was Cambridge.

I was already free.

By evening, at the MIT School of Architecture’s new student welcome event, the dream’s unease still lingered. I felt distracted. Everything around me was new and free, a world away from West Point, but I still hadn’t gotten used to it.

“Are you okay? You look a little pale.”

A gentle male voice sounded beside me. I turned to see an Asian boy with a bright smile, holding two cups of hot cocoa. He offered one to me.

“I’m Liam,” he said with a smile. “It’s kind of stuffy in here. Something warm might help.”

The sweetness of the hot cocoa warmed my fingers.

“Thank you,” I said softly.

Liam’s gaze was open and friendly. “New student events are always a little chaotic. If you’re okay with it, can I add you on Instagram? We could help each other out with classes later.”
