His Smokescreen Is Now the Woman He Can’t Have Chapter 22

“She wasn’t… Didn’t she always want my attention? Didn’t she act that way just to get me to look at her?”

Major Davies frowned, looking at him as if he were a clueless new recruit.

“Sterling, Elara never did any of that for you.” The instructor’s tone was cold. “She was always one of our strongest cadets. The clumsiness, the slackness—it was all an act. The person you saw at the hearing was the real her.”

“She chose this path for herself,” the instructor emphasized again. “Not for you.”

Caleb’s breathing hitched. After a few seconds, he asked with difficulty, “Then why did she do it?”

Davies looked at him, a trace of mockery in his eyes.

“Didn’t you read the internal forum posts? The ones about why she had to pretend to be a ‘harmless follower’?”

Caleb’s face slowly turned pale. “Those… weren’t just made up by Isabelle’s friends to ostracize her?”

“Made up?” The instructor sounded as if he’d heard something absurd. “Sterling, do you really think someone who earned a full scholarship from MIT needs to fabricate stories to take down a rival?”

He paused, his gaze landing squarely on Caleb’s face.

“The forum posts haven’t been deleted. Go read them yourself. See what Captain Vance’s daughter actually went through at West Point all these years.”
