My Sister Threw Away Her Fiancé Like Trash So I Married Him Instead Chapter 04

The alarm cut off. Samuel hit a button somewhere.

Silence.

I stood in the middle of the room, cold all over. One thought running on a loop: it’s over.

Samuel leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed.

“When did you start seeing the golden text?”

“From the beginning?”

My mouth moved. Nothing came out.

The golden words were going haywire above his head.

[Oof. This is a disaster.]

[That gold-digger is cooked.]

[Honestly though, her acting was solid. If Samuel hadn’t flagged it, I would’ve been fooled.]

[Moron. He was playing with you. Did you seriously think a man like that would want someone like you?]

The realization settled over me like ice water.

Samuel could see the text too. This whole thing, from the very first moment, had been a hunt. And I was the prey who’d performed for an audience, thinking I was the one running the con.

“You almost had me at first, I’ll give you that.” Samuel’s voice was almost conversational. “You played the part well – sad little illegitimate daughter, beaten down by her big sister, soft and genuine. I nearly bought it.”

He crossed the room and stopped about three feet away.

“Then I looked into you.”

A short, cold laugh. “You said your mom got tricked into an affair. Harrison swept her off her feet, lied to her, the whole sob story. What about you, Willow?”

“You went after your roommate’s boyfriend when you were fifteen, didn’t you.”

“And that student council president in high school – the guy almost dropped out over you.”

“And then you went after his father. Father and son both. Willow, you’ve got range.”

I dug my nails into my palm.

“College was even better.”

Samuel kept going. “An affair with a professor. Took two hundred grand from his wife as hush money. And

after graduation-”

“Enough.”

My voice finally worked.

“What, can dish it out but can’t hear it?”

Samuel raised an eyebrow. “Though at first I only suspected. I thought maybe I hadn’t hidden my real identity

well enough.”

“You want to know when I knew for certain you could see the text?”

I looked at him.

“The day I brought you to the apartment,” Samuel said. “Before I said anything, you went straight to the right

room.”

“I was completely certain that only I knew about that place.”

I drew a slow breath. “If you already knew, why didn’t you call it out?”

Samuel smiled. “Watching you work so hard to seduce me was entertaining.”

“But.” He took a step closer and gripped my chin.

“I’m bored now.”

“A gold-digger reaching for things that were never yours. Willow, do you really think you’re worth that?”

He let go like he’d touched something dirty. Wiped his hand on his pants.

“Get out.”

“Don’t let me see your face again.”

The golden text exploded with approval.

[YES. She came crawling, he took what he wanted – classic.]

[That’s exactly how you handle a woman like her.]

[Good riddance. Looking at her makes me sick.]

I didn’t move.

“You deaf?”

Samuel’s eyes narrowed.

I lifted my head slowly.

The fear and humiliation were gone from my face.

What replaced them was a strange, flat calm.

“Don Samuel.” My voice was steady. “Do you know the secret to making a side relationship stick?”

Something twitched near his brow.

I didn’t wait for an answer.

I reached into my pocket, pulled something out, and dropped it on the bed.

A pregnancy test.

Two solid red lines.

For the first time, the absolute control on Samuel’s face cracked.
