Wyatt stared at her.

“I’m her sister. I know her better than anyone.” Clara grabbed the official’s arm, clutching it like a lifeline. “She doesn’t understand the first thing about ranching. All she cares about are Austin parties and designer bags. She either plagiarized that plan or paid someone to write it. You have to investigate!”

The smile on the official’s face vanished.

He frowned, quietly pulling his arm from her grasp.

“Miss Clara, do you understand what you are saying?” His tone turned serious. “Making such a baseless accusation against an award recipient is highly inappropriate.”

“But—”

“No buts.” The official cut her off. “The committee has a rigorous anonymous review and defense process. This proposal was so professional that we conducted a second round of background verification. The result was unequivocal. The plan was entirely Miss Vance’s work. There is no possibility of academic dishonesty.”

At this, his gaze on Clara turned colder.

He had previously received an anonymous tip about Clara’s behavior at home, but he hadn’t taken it seriously at the time.

Now, it seemed that tip may have had some merit.

The official’s tone softened, but his words carried more weight.

“We also noted that the impression Miss Vance gives the public differs greatly from her actual abilities. After a brief investigation, we believe she had personal family reasons for choosing not to display her talents before now.”
