The moment the call connected, his fury erupted.

“Get down to the courthouse right now and file a motion to vacate the divorce judgment. Now! I don’t care what you have to do. Get it voided!”

There was a pause on the other end of the line.

Douglas’s voice was heavy.

“Carter, I was just about to call you. I received a copy of the final judgment from the Boston firm.”

“Then overturn it!”

“It can’t be overturned,” Douglas said slowly. “I’ve just read through it. This agreement was drafted by one of Boston’s top family law teams. There are no loopholes. Especially that clause waiving parental rights…”

He hesitated, as if searching for a gentler way to deliver the blow.

“I’m sorry, Carter. Under Massachusetts law, once a judgment like this is entered, it’s virtually impossible to reverse. Legally speaking… you are no longer that child’s father.”

Carter froze, the words turning to ice in his veins.

“What did you say?”

“You voluntarily and explicitly waived all rights,” Douglas continued. “Visitation, custody, the right to be informed… it’s all gone. You signed it yourself.”

The phone slipped from Carter’s hand and clattered onto the stone terrace.

Savannah had followed him out and happened to hear the last few sentences.

Her eyes lit up. She rushed forward and wrapped her arms around him from behind.

“That’s wonderful, Carter! Isn’t this great news? She gave up on her own! We can finally get married. There’s nothing standing in our way!”

She was genuinely ecstatic.

But Carter’s heart was in a freefall.

In exchange for an “heir,” he had received a final, binding divorce decree.

And a document, signed in his own hand, that permanently severed him from his own child.

He had signed himself out of his daughter’s life.

Carter stood there, his world crumbling around him.
