Seeing that pleading was useless, Camden and Preston exchanged a look.

Preston slowly got to his feet, his eyes turning cold.

“Laney, I’m sorry. But we can’t let you leave with him.”

He raised a hand.

Dozens of bodyguards materialized from the surrounding woods, encircling the three of them.

Archer instantly shielded Laney, his blade at the ready.

His eyes began to glow gold.

“Archer, don’t.” Laney grabbed his arm. “You should go. They want me. You don’t have to—”

“I told you,” Archer interrupted. “I’m not leaving you behind.”

He glared at Camden and Preston, his gaze as sharp as a hawk’s.

“If you want to take her, you’ll have to kill me first.”

Preston sneered.

“You think I won’t?”

Just as the two sides were about to clash, Laney suddenly broke free from Archer and walked forward.

“Laney.” Archer reached for her.

Laney gently shook her head and faced Camden and Preston, her lips moving silently.

“I’ll go back with you.”

Both men’s eyes lit up.

Laney continued.

“But you have to call off the hunt and the bounty on Archer. Right now. From this day forward, you are not to touch him.”

“When I have confirmed that he is safely away, I will go with you.”

“Laney, no,” Archer said, his voice urgent. “I can get you out of here. I—”

Laney turned back to him.

“You’re injured. You’ve been pushing yourself for days. I can see it.”

“Don’t throw your life away for me. It’s not worth it.”

She turned back to Camden and Preston.

“Swear it. Or I’ll die right here, right now.”

Camden nodded immediately.

“I swear. As long as Archer leaves, I will never go after him again.”

Preston gritted his teeth. “I agree.”

Laney took a breath, slowly released Archer’s hand, and started walking toward them.

Camden and Preston watched her approach, their hearts pounding.
