Laney stopped.

“She saved my life,” Archer said. “When I was at my lowest, she was the one who pulled me back from the edge.”

“Now it’s my turn. I won’t abandon her.”

“You’ll die,” the man said.

“Then I’ll die.” Archer’s voice was calm. “But I won’t hand her over to them.”

“They don’t deserve her.”

Laney’s eyes burned.

The man sighed deeply and shoved a package into Archer’s hands.

“There are new IDs in there, and some cash.”

“Head south. There’s a small town called Willow Creek. I have an old house there.”

“Go there and wait for me to contact you.”

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me. You’re my brother.” The man clapped him on the shoulder. “Take care. Don’t contact me again, or they’ll start watching me, too.”

After the man left, Archer stood there for a moment before returning to the cave.

Laney scrambled back to her makeshift bed, pretending to be asleep.

She heard Archer sit down beside her. After a long time, he said quietly,

“Laney, I’ll get you out of here.”

“We’ll go somewhere no one knows us.”

“We’ll start over.”

Laney kept her eyes closed as tears slowly soaked the dry leaves beneath her.

A burst of chaotic footsteps came from the forest.

The snap of branches underfoot, the metallic click of guns being loaded, and an oppressive mix of pheromones weaving through the air.

Laney jolted awake.

They were surrounded.

Archer was already on his feet, his body a barrier at the mouth of the cave.

His Alpha pheromones—ancient cedar, wild honey, and the first snow of winter—spread through the morning fog.

“Don’t come out,” he said quietly.

Soon, Camden and Preston emerged from the trees.

Camden’s Alpha pheromones were a storm, raging and on the verge of losing control.

Preston’s face was ashen, his eyes shot through with red.

In just a few days, both men had lost a shocking amount of weight and looked haggard and broken.

The moment they saw Laney, their eyes reddened.

“Laney…” Camden’s voice was hoarse. “I finally found you…”

He took a step forward, but Archer blocked him with his blade.

Preston dropped to his knees in the mud.
