The 99th Chance I Gave You Chapter 06

Outside the office, Sylvia walked in with a file. The grievance from earlier was gone from her face, and she even carried a hint of barely hidden pleasure.

“Mr. Fenton, this legal notice just arrived.”

Nathaniel’s gaze swept over the words “divorce settlement agreement” on the paper, and he fell

back into his chair.

After a long time, he seemed to finally find his breath again.

He took out his phone and called Edward Cole, his voice so hoarse it barely sounded like his own.

“Help me trace where this sender ID came from.”

After hanging up, Nathaniel stayed in the office until the end of the workday.

At last, he pushed open the door to my office and sat in my chair, looking at the photo of us on my

desk.

The memories he had ignored for too long finally rose one by one.

9 years ago, Nathaniel and I first met at an Oxford Union debate.

Back then, I was at my sharpest. With only a few sentences, I argued my opponent into silence.

Unsurprisingly, Nathaniel lost to me too.

But he was different from the other boys.

After the debate ended, when other boys heard my name, all they thought was that I was strong-willed, difficult, and hard to approach.

Only he said I was rational, smart, and decisive.

From then on, he began pursuing me.

From meeting to falling in love, we spent 2 years.

From falling in love to getting married, we spent another 2.

Even now, he still remembered every detail of the day he proposed.

He remembered how thrilled he had been when I blushed and nodded.

That ecstasy had even surpassed the moment he signed a $1,000,000,000 contract.

But later, problems still appeared between us.

He couldn’t say exactly where they began.

He only felt the distance between us growing little by little.

Many longtime colleagues had noticed something was wrong and had tried to hint at it to him.

But by then, he had become CEO of Fenton Group.

He stood too high and thought too highly of himself.

Thinking about it now, if he had listened to even 1 sentence back then, maybe we wouldn’t have ended up here.

9 years of love had come to this.

While his thoughts churned, the call came back.

“I found the address. But are you sure you want to go? You’ll have to fly.”

Nathaniel’s parents died in a plane crash.

Ever since then, planes and the sky had become his nightmare.

Even for overseas projects, he never flew there personally.

Every time, he sent the person he trusted most, me, with the contracts he had signed in advance.

“What happened? Why do you suddenly need to go to Edinburgh?”

The person on the other end pressed for the reason.

Nathaniel stayed silent for a moment before slowly letting out a breath.

“Eleanor left…”

“Huh?”

The person on the phone was clearly stunned, but unexpectedly, he didn’t keep asking.

Nathaniel asked in a low voice, “Let me ask you something. These past 3 years, did all of you think Sylvia and I were too close?”

“Did you also think I wronged Eleanor Hart?”

The other end fell silent.

And sometimes, silence itself was the answer.

“I understand.”

Nathaniel spoke bitterly.

“I was wrong. After Sylvia Hayes appeared, I was genuinely drawn to her out of control.”

“I always felt that sometimes, she was like the younger Eleanor Hart. Bright, bold, impossible to look away from.”

“But I shouldn’t have treated her like your replacement.”

“In these 2 years, I personally used up all 99 chances Eleanor gave me.”

“I never thought I would separate from her.

“But now, she doesn’t want me anymore.”

At this point, Nathaniel’s voice dropped, choked to the point that he could barely speak.

After a long silence, the person on the other end finally said slowly, “Okay. I understand.”

After the call ended, a text popped up.

“The legal notice was sent from this address. If you go ask around, you should be able to get news about her.”

A few hours later, I arrived in Edinburgh smoothly.

The moment I landed, Professor Whitmore and the colleagues from Whitmore & Shaw LLP were waiting outside to welcome me to the new team.

This was my 3rd time in Edinburgh.

The previous times had all been for business trips. On the same day I finished signing contracts, I would be called back to London.

Now that I no longer had the pressure of Fenton Group weighing on me, I felt lighter than I ever had.

From today on, I only needed to live for myself.
