His smile was ugly. “You’re very good at packaging things, aren’t you? And I suppose those four little assets in your belly are your retirement plan. Very clever.”

The people around us fell silent.

My face went cold.

Just as I was about to deliver a retort that would have flayed him alive, a strong arm wrapped around my waist from behind.

I turned to see Liam standing beside me, his expression glacial.

“Davies.” His voice was dangerously quiet. “Since when do you have the right to comment on how the Walker family’s money is spent?”

Davies’s face went white.

“Liam, I was just making a joke—”

“Apologize to her.”

Davies immediately turned to me, his head bowed, his voice trembling.

“Ava… Mrs. Walker… I’m so sorry. I spoke out of turn.”

“Get out,” Liam said, his voice flat.

Davies practically ran from the room.

Liam steered me away from the crowd and out onto a quiet terrace.

The cool night air helped to dissipate the anger still simmering inside me.

“Are you all right?” he asked, his voice gentle.

“I’m fine.”

Liam took my hand—the one wearing his ring—and pressed a soft kiss to the back of it.

“Ava, marry me.”

He said it again.

This time, there was no velvet box, no audience.

Just the quiet of the night, the glittering lights of Los Angeles spread out below us, and the unwavering sincerity in his eyes.

I looked at him for a long time.

Then I nodded.

“Okay.”

Liam seemed to freeze.

“You… you said yes?”

“I said yes.”

The next second, he pulled me into his arms, holding me so tightly it was hard to breathe.

“Thank you,” he whispered into my hair. “Thank you for giving me another chance.”

I leaned against his chest, listening to the rapid, unsteady rhythm of his heart, and finally, I smiled.

From now on, we would walk the rest of the road together.
