After I Left, His Empire Collapsed Chapter 27

Dylan barely paused.

“Designs. What designs. Stop with the theatrics. Sterling & Sterling is our strategic partner. We’re solid.”

He didn’t finish.

A pounding sound. Loud. Urgent. Through his end of the call.

Then his assistant’s voice. Panicked. Breathless.

“Mr. Croft. Sir. Trouble.”

“The Sterling & Sterling Asia-Pacific rep. Here. Now. Demanding to see you immediately.”

The line went dead silent.

I could picture him. The smugness draining. The confusion. The rage right behind it.

His voice came back. Tight. Accusing.

“Vanessa. What did you do.”

He was scrambling. Blaming.

“Don’t think resigning lets you off the hook. If this deal collapses, you were COO. The liability is yours too.”

I laughed. Cold.

“Sorry, Mr. Croft. You fired me. Remember?”

“I’m a former employee. That disaster? It’s not my hole to fill.”

“All those losses. Yours to carry.”

Silence.

Then his assistant again. More frantic.

“Sir. The client. They brought the contract. They want to discuss it in person.”

Dylan exhaled. Relief. He pulled the phone close. Voice dripping smugness again.

“See? Routine check. Year two. They just want to go over things.”

Then, almost tenderly.

“Why so quiet?”

“Stay on the line. Hear how this ends. Let it sink in.”

The man had a flair for self-destruction. Almost artistic.
