Nathan Reed frowned.

“Vivian Hale, don’t play hard to get with me.”

“I told you yesterday. Chloe River is just my secretary. You threw wine on her in front of everyone. You humiliated me.”

“I held back the capital infusion to teach you a lesson.”

I looked at the lipstick smudge on his collar.

It was Chloe’s favorite shade.

He followed my gaze, then seemed to remember something.

The corner of his mouth lifted faintly.

“I get it.”

Nathan pinched my chin.

“What do you get?”

“I was immature before.”

Nathan froze for a second.

“Good. Glad you finally understand.”

“Don’t always expect other people to clean up your mess.”

He looked nothing like he had the first time he came to my home for dinner.

That day, my father cooked an entire table of food.

After dinner, he called Nathan into the study and solemnly placed my hand in Nathan’s palm.

“Vivian has been spoiled by me. She has a temper. Please be patient with her in the future.”

Back then, Nathan held my hand.

“Don’t worry, sir. I’ll protect her. I won’t let her be wronged.”

That night, my eyes turned red.

But now, the man who once promised to protect me was forcing me to lower my head and apologize.

The phone on the nightstand suddenly rang.

Nathan glanced at me and answered.

“What’s wrong?”

His voice softened instantly.

His hand paused.

“I’ll come right away.”

He hung up.

“Chloe had an allergic reaction. I’m going to check on her.”

“Vivian Hale, your father spoiled you too much.”

“Everyone used to give in to you. Now that you’ve married me, you need to learn how to back down.”

I stood in place and watched him fix his tie.

Then I looked down at the twenty-three missed calls on my phone.

“You’re going to the hospital?”

Nathan stopped and turned to look at me.

“What? Checking up on me again?”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Take that card with you. Buy her a new dress.”

Nathan’s expression darkened.

He strode toward me.

“Vivian Hale, do you have to be passive-aggressive right now?”

He gave a cold laugh.

“Since you’re so generous, the funding can wait another three days.”

“When you learn how to speak properly, I’ll send the funds.”

Ever since Hale Group’s cash flow crisis broke out, everyone knew Nathan Reed was the Hale family’s last lifeline.

And because of that, he became more and more certain that I could not leave him.

He stopped answering my calls.

He began taking Chloe to every event.

He began using one sentence to silence me.

“If you keep making trouble, the Hale funds will be delayed a few more days.”

Then he turned and walked out.

“You’d better finish that box of scratch-offs. I’ll check them tomorrow morning.”

“And stop looking so grim. Bad omen.”

The door slammed shut.

The bridal suite went quiet.

I walked into the dressing room and took out a suitcase.

Then I started folding my clothes and putting them inside.

Nathan did not know.

To escape the loan sharks chasing him, my father had climbed onto the corporate rooftop.

He slipped by accident and fell from the eighteenth floor.

He died on the spot.
