Elise’s gaze drifted over Calvin’s cold, 

expressionless face. “Why do you think I’m here?” 

With that, she lowered her phone, the screen still 

showing the ended call. 

Calvin’s expression darkened. “Why didn’t you tell 

me you were sick?” 

When he saw her struggling to lift the IV line, he raised his hand to help. But she turned away to 

avoid him and calmly pulled the needle out herself. 

“No need to trouble you, Mr. Fulton. I can take care 

of myself. I know how to go to a doctor when I’m 

sick.” 

When she’d caught the flu before, she’d been so 

sick that her whole body ached, and she couldn’t 

even get up from bed. In her misery, she hadn’t 

been able to stop herself from texting Calvin. 

What had he said at the time? Oh, right. “Go to the 

hospital if you’re sick. Why are you looking for me? I’m not a doctor. I don’t know how to treat you.” 

Calvin vaguely remembered her mentioning that 

before; he’d just never realized it had been that serious. His gaze turned complicated. “Elise, are 

you mad at me?” 

Right then, the twins heard the noise outside and 

came running out. When they saw Elise standing 

there in a hospital gown, both of them froze in 

shock. 

“Mommy, you’re sick?” 

It’d been a while since Rowan saw her, but his joy was swiftly replaced with alarm. He rushed forward and grabbed her hand. He didn’t like that she was 

always hovering over him and controlling him, but 

that didn’t mean he wanted her to get sick. 

Regina stood blankly in the doorway, her voice 

barely above a whisper. “Mommy… why are you in 

the hospital? Is it because my earlier curse came 

true? Is this payback? No, I didn’t actually want it to 

happen…” 

Her eyes reddened, and panic crept in. 

When Elise heard her words, she just felt tired. The 

child she’d carried to term and risked her life to 

bring into this world had cursed her with falling sick 

behind her back. 

Her tone turned cold. “Gina, Ro, what exactly did I do wrong? What made you dislike me this much… 

to the point that you actually hate me?” 

Both kids‘ eyes instantly turned red. 

“Ro, Gina, who’s bullying you?” A worried female voice drifted out from the hospital room. 

Sabrina shuffled out of bed unsteadily, hurrying toward them. She nearly collapsed in the doorway 

from “weakness” and started to fall straight to the 

floor. 

“Sabrina!” Rowan and Regina cried out in unison, 

immediately forgetting about Elise and sprinting.

Calvin stood closest to Sabrina. He reacted quickly 

and caught her in his arms. He frowned, but there 

was no hiding the concern in his eyes. “You’re still 

sick. Stay in bed and rest.”

Elise watched the scene, feeling like a blow had 

been delivered straight to her heart. A familiar, 

suffocating ache branded itself deeper inside her. Being loved and not being loved–the difference was painfully obvious. 

How could she ever have been so stupid before? 

Sabrina seemed to finally notice there was 

someone else standing there. She blinked in 

surprise. “Elise, you’re here, too? I thought that after last night, you-” 

She didn’t get to finish. Calvin cut in icily, “Elise, explain why there was mugwort on your clothes.” 

“Yeah! Mommy, Sabrina almost died because of your clothes!” Regina’s voice turned fierce and accusing again. 

Even if Elise was sick, it was just because she 

hadn’t taken care of herself. She had only herself.

Elise lowered her head, calmly swabbing the back. of her hand with an alcohol pad. She said quietly, ” Because of you two. You said you liked the way I smelled, so I scented every piece of my clothing

with Calvin. “Haven’t you also smelled it on me 

before, Mr. Fulton? How could you forget? Or was 

there some other fragrance that left a stronger 

impression?” 

It was one thing for the twins to forget about the 

mugwort because they were young, but for him, as 

her husband, to also forget… What a joke. 

Calvin’s face turned stormy. After a long silence, he 

finally said, “Whatever the case, Sabrina had an 

allergic reaction because of you. The painting your 

grandfather gave you as one of your wedding gifts is still at Tranquility Estate–give it to Sabrina as an 

apology. 

“On top of that, you’re to apologize to her in 

person. We’ll consider this matter settled once you 

do that.”
