My Marriage: His Debt to Another Woman Chapter 20

His gaze dropped to my belly.

I had no intention of letting him in.

“Go home. And don’t come back.”

I moved to shut the door.

But Jake shot out a hand, blocking it with his arm.

“Elara, listen to me.” His tone was urgent. “I’ve done a lot of thinking. I realize now… it’s not that I don’t have feelings for you. It’s not just that I’m not used to you being gone. It’s real. I can’t let you go.”

I almost laughed.

“Jake, what do you think Chloe would say if she heard that?”

“I’ve already made things clear with her,” he answered immediately, as if he’d rehearsed the line. “What I feel for her is responsibility, nothing more.”

I didn’t believe a word of it.

“Jake, you really don’t need to waste your breath on me.” I looked at him, my voice cold. “I’ve already stepped aside. You’re free to go to her.”

“Elara, please, just give me one more chance.” He suddenly grabbed my arm, his grip surprisingly strong. “I’ll be a good husband. I’ll be a good father.”

I looked down at his hand on my arm.

I used to dream about what it would feel like for him to hold on to me like this, like he couldn’t let go.

Now, all I felt was irritation.

He had clearly come here with a plan.

I wouldn’t let him in, but he refused to leave.

“Elara.” His voice dropped, pleading. “I know I hurt you because of Chloe. I know I was wrong. Just give me one more chance, please.”
