My Marriage: His Debt to Another Woman Chapter 13

Our families had known each other years ago.

The first time I really met Jake was at a family party. My stepsister was cornering me.

She had snatched my sketchbook, flipping through the pages with a sneer. “More of these useless little drawings?”

Then, right in front of me, she tore the sketchbook in half.

Jake and his family walked in at that exact moment.

He saw my tear-filled eyes and the smug look on my stepsister’s face. He walked over, took the torn pages from her hand, and spoke in a voice so cold it was terrifying.

“Pick them up. And apologize.”

My stepsister, utterly intimidated, stammered an apology and fled.

From that day on, I never forgot him.

I started following any news I could find about him. I knew when he enlisted, when he was deployed, and when he retired and came home. My quiet crush grew into an open pursuit.

I even let myself imagine that one day, I might actually become a part of his life.

But in my family, marriage was a transaction, not a choice. My father had already arranged a match for me, one that would benefit the family business.

I didn’t have the power to resist.

Besides, I had chased Jake for so long, and he had always been cool and distant. He rarely even met my eye. I thought he must dislike me, so I’d finally backed off.

Just when I’d resigned myself to my fate, Jake suddenly appeared and proposed.

I was floored. Overjoyed.

I immediately confronted my father, giving up my seat on the family foundation’s board just to get out of the engagement.
