Kael clenched his fists, rage and resentment burning in his eyes. “Lyra! How can you be so ungrateful? We kept you safe all these years—you would’ve perished in pack conflicts without us!”

“Sheltered?” I let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “That was never shelter—it was captivity, exploitation and endless suffering. True shelter is quiet companionship—someone who stands by you when you’re in danger. It is not selfish control and endless exploitation, like what you did.”

I turned to look at Kane beside me. This was my true destiny. My true protector.

Pain flashed across Evan’s face. “Lyra, we truly know we were wrong. Can’t you give us just one chance to make things right?”

“There are no second chances.”

My voice was firm, leaving no room for negotiation. “I broke free not to listen to your hollow excuses. I did it for my own freedom and my own dignity.”

I looked at Reese. For the first time, his eyes held nothing but panic and desperation. And I felt nothing at all.
