But before I could process the horror, something bizarre happened.

The frenzied infected all stopped at once the moment they saw me.

The one closest to me froze with its blood-smeared claws still hanging in the air, then lowered its head and took a timid step back.

Right after that, all of them began backing away, one step at a time, as if they were afraid of something.

The chat pings hit a fever pitch:

[Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit! The villainess is the Alpha??? The final ultimate boss from the original story was you this whole time???]

[I’m losing my mind. I thought she was cannon fodder who got killed off early, but she was the hidden boss all along?]

[Wait, didn’t the male lead kill the Alpha in the original story? So the villainess really does end up dying by his hand? That’s brutal.]

I was… the Alpha?

I looked at Nolan on instinct.

He was standing right beside me, and somehow his eyes were even redder than mine.

“Delaney.”

I took a step back.

“Delaney…” he called again, his voice already breaking apart.

“Monster! She’s a monster!”

Kellan’s scream exploded behind me. He snatched up the steel pipe from the ground and charged straight at me.

I didn’t dodge.

Panic flared in Nolan’s eyes. He grabbed my arm and yanked me out of the way.

Kellan missed.

And in that exact moment, the infected closest to me suddenly turned back, grabbed Kellan, and bit down hard.

Blood sprayed across the doorframe, the glass, and my shoes.

Sienna’s scream tore through the night.

She tried to run, but her foot caught, and she crashed to the ground.

One of the infected lunged at her and sank its teeth into her lower leg.

“Nolan—!”

She screamed his name and reached for him.

But Nolan was still staring at me, like he hadn’t heard a thing.

Maddox rushed over and smashed that infected away with his bat, then dragged Sienna into the corner of the room.

He turned and shouted through gritted teeth at Nolan, “Kill her! Nolan, put her down before she finishes the job!”

I stood there trembling all over.

Staring at the pool of red on the ground, I felt a sudden, violent hunger rise up inside me.

It roared in my ears, a dark tide threatening to pull me under.

Nolan stepped toward me and slowly held out his hand.

I jolted hard and turned to run.

…Was he about to kill me?

Pure survival instinct drove me forward as fast as I could. Urgent footsteps pounded behind me.

He was chasing me.

His fingertips brushed my wrist once, trying to catch me, but I was too fast now. He couldn’t hold on.

I didn’t dare stop.

Little by little, I left him behind.

The wind shredded his voice until only fragments reached me.

“Delaney… come… wait…”

I didn’t stop until his voice had vanished completely into the night, until even the gunfire from the refuge camp had faded away.

Only then did I finally crouch down behind an overturned truck and curl in on myself.

[God, the villainess is so tragic. That scene with the male lead chasing after her had me tearing up… this is sweet, but it hurts like hell.]

[If I remember the original setup right, the Alpha gets to keep her self-awareness, doesn’t need food or sleep, and can control every infected. Honestly, that’s not even a bad deal.]

[Trading love for immortality and absolute power? That bargain doesn’t sound so terrible.]

I stared at the words drifting past.

I wanted to cry.

But my eyes were so dry I couldn’t squeeze out a single tear.
