Divorced & Dying The Mafia Boss Regrets Everything Chapter 23

No sooner had Grace agreed than she was surrounded by a swarm of strangers the next day, all chattering away it was maddening.

Dominic, who had stood by throughout, grew more and more serious, and by the end, his eyes were red. Grace saw his hands trembling uncontrollably.

As soon as the group left, Dominic came back to the room. Without a word, he tucked her blanket, checked her IV–busy, silent, but making Grace dizzy.

“I told you it was pointless.”

Even though she couldn’t understand a word of their babbling, she could tell her condition was very serious.

Dominic froze, turned away, and bit his lip to keep from sobbing.

The doctor said that Grace could have been in better shape for surgery, but now her lungs were severely damaged. With repeated serious injuries and resuscitations, her current condition made the surgery much more difficult and extremely risky.

And he was to blame.

Every scar on her body had been caused by him. He had been pushing Grace toward death all along.

Grace could see the slight tremor in his shoulders, but there was nothing she could do. In the end, she was the one who spoke first. “It’s okay. I don’t care. What’s there to…”

Her lips met something soft and wet. Grace let him kiss her, let him cry on her face.

When she finally couldn’t breathe, he pulled back. His hair fell over his eyes, and all she could see was his clenched jaw–she knew he was still blaming himself.

They looked at each other in silence.

He couldn’t move past this. As long as Grace was in danger, he would be on edge.

But the surgery couldn’t be delayed any longer. The tumor was still growing,

Grace went blind the day before the surgery.

In broad daylight, Dominic had just drawn the curtains when, before he could turn around, Grace asked him why he had done it. It was too dark. She didn’t like it.

Dominic didn’t know how to describe how he felt. He turned numbly and took her hand, rubbing it gently, unable to speak.

He would rather endure all her pain himself.

When they prepared to shave her head before the surgery, Finnegan and Liam were both there, reassuring her that she would be fine, that she would wake up feeling better. Grace ran her hand over her itchy scalp and nodded, smiling. Liam held her hand tightly. “Grace, God will watch over you.“‘

Grace smiled at him

As she was being wheeled into the operating room, Grace called out for them to stop. She asked Dominic to come closer.

“Dominic, I forgive you.”

Then she pushed him away. As he stood there stunned, she was wheeled away, and the operating room door closed.

Dominic stood there for a very long time.

[Dominic, I forgive you.]

It meant that even if she died, he shouldn’t blame himself–she had forgiven him.

He raised his hands to his face and wept openly.

Liam looked down, not meeting his eyes. Finnegan sighed and looked away.

The surgery lasted three days and three nights and was a success.

But the doctor told Dominic that Grace’s vital signs were stable, but whether she would wake up was up to

her.

At first, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. But when three months passed and she still hadn’t woken, even Finnegan, who couldn’t bear to see him suffer, began urging Dominic to let go.

“Even if you can’t let her go, at least let yourself go.”

Dominic acted as if he hadn’t heard. Day after day, he massaged Grace’s muscles. He didn’t want her to wake up and see them atrophied. He wanted her whole and healthy.

Grace was everything to him. Even if it meant breaking his word, he would keep her.

Dominic couldn’t bear to lose Grace again.

Liam came every day. Unlike this silence, he always had plenty to say. Dominic allowed it. It was for the best

at least Grace wouldn’t be lonely.

Six months later, Dominic started working again, but his office was now in the hospital. He spent more time at Grace’s bedside than anyone.

Yet even so, he still missed seeing Grace when she first woke up after nearly a year.

That day, Liam was reading the New York Times by her bed. When he put the paper down, he saw Grace staring at him with bewildered eyes. He knocked over the chairs, stumbling as he ran to call the nurse.

It was Dominic who burst through the door first. One stood at the doorway, one lay in bed. They stared at each other in silence, and Dominic’s eyes reddened first.

Grace’s recovery was called a miracle by the hospital.

She had survived the pain of a malignant tumor, made it through surgery, and woken up after nearly a year in a coma. Except for some lingering lack of fine motor control and unavoidable lung problems, everything else was remarkably normal.

She spent another half year in the hospital, and then Dominic took her home.

“Sienna has gone crazy. Her doctor boyfriend got hooked on drugs After he spent all their money, he forced

her into prostitution…”

Dominic answered with a noncommittal “Mm” and, hearing a sound behind him, quickly ended the call.

“Whatever you want, I’ll get it for you.”

Grace had been living like this for half a year. At first, she couldn’t get used to having everything done for her–meals brought, clothes handed to her. She would shake her head and insist on doing it herself. But under the man’s burning gaze, she eventually gave in.

When she had mostly recovered, Finnegan brought his granddaughter, who could now walk, to visit. They agreed that at the belated first birthday party, the baby would formally have Grace as her godmother.

Dominic shamelessly said, “That makes me the godfather,” but the little girl slapped him away, making

Grace laugh.

Before, when Grace was still unconscious, he hadn’t thought much of Liam. Now, seeing their heads almost touching, he felt very annoyed. He cleared his throat, sat down between them, and calmly took a sip of tea. “What are you two talking about? Let me in on it.”

Grace rapped him sharply on the head.

Later, Dominic secretly got their marriage license back and practically wore it on his face, leaving Grace speechless.

The cicadas sang outside the window, and in the blink of an eye, another midsummer had come.

One day, Grace was rudely awakened from her nap by the heat. She opened her eyes and saw a pair of bony hands locked tight around her waist.

Hate? Love?

Everything had faded with the wind.
