The convoy moved through the city, leaving the gilded cathedral far behind. The sun still shone, but the air inside

the car felt lighter now.

Castillo Estate. An ancient stone fortress and a monument to old money. I hadn’t set foot here in ten years. It

hadn’t changed at all. Rows of family members and trusted associates lined the driveway, bowing deeply as I passed. “Ms.

The grand hall was arranged for the conclave. The sacred symbols of our family rested on the dais. The room was

packed with the hard and dangerous faces of our world. With Leo and Mateo steadying me, I ascended the platform.

I looked at Mateo. “You will oversee this.”

Mateo dropped to one knee, head bowed. “Ms. Castillo, it is my honor. I will not fail you.”

I nodded. “Good. Now, let the conclave begin.”

One by one, the newly appointed capos and counselors stepped onto the platform. They knelt and swore their oaths

“I will. Ms. Castillo.” they all vowed, steel in their voices.

By the time the last oath was spoken, night had fallen. I stood on the dais and looked out over the assembled family

Later, in Leo’s study, he poured two glasses of amber-colored liquor. “What’s your plan, Elara? Will you stay””

I picked up my glass, the cool crystal solid in my hand. “I’m retiring. Again.”

He looked up, surprised. “I thought you’d come back.”

“No. Leo. I’m tired,” I went on. “But don’t worry. I won’t let myself end up vulnerable again.”

Leo nodded. He understood. “We’ll handle it. A new place. Your security will be airtight.”

A week later, I settled into a new penthouse in a building the family quietly owned. The staff knew. The neighbors

knew. I sat on the terrace, watching the sunset bleed across the sky in shades of fire.

“Ms. Castillo. Mateo stood in the doorway, a file in his hand.

“Come in.”

He sat across from me. “We’ve already received over fifty credible referrals. We’re stepping in to provide legal aid.

“Good,” I said.

“And… that woman, Janice. She pled guilty. Seven years for false imprisonment, battery, and theft. The civil suits are

still pending. She’s finished.”

I gazed out the window, the city lights beginning to sparkle below.

“Ms. Castillo, Mateo asked softly, “do you still hate her?”

I considered it for a moment. “No. Hatred is poison. She did this to herself, and now she’s paying the price. But

forgive her? Never. Some lines, once you cross them, there’s no going back. Forgiveness is for people who are truly sorry.

not for people who are just sorry they got caught.”

Mateo nodded. “Understood.” He rose to his feet. “I’ll leave you to your peace.”
