One by one, everyone in the Snapchat group checked in saying they’d made it home safely.

Except me.

My Uber still hadn’t shown up.

Mom was stuck working late at the company tonight and couldn’t pick me up, so I figured I’d just walk home slowly since it wasn’t that far.

Then Hazel updated her Reddit post again.

[I asked my boyfriend tonight if he believes true love matters more than everything else. He totally agreed. I’m literally crying rn. I can’t wait to finally tell him.]

[You only withdrew his MIT application like two days ago. Seriously, stop screwing around and tell him already. If he emails admissions now and explains it was an accidental withdrawal, they might manually restore it. But they usually only give one chance for that. Don’t ruin his future.]

The post disappeared again a few seconds later.

I exited the app and noticed a new message notification.

Julian.

[Need me to pick you up?]

[No thanks.] I replied.

His response came instantly.

[Fine. Be stubborn. Have fun walking home then.]

I locked my phone and shoved it into my pocket.

The second I reached the corner, the roar of engines exploded down the street.

A line of motorcycles covered in flashing neon lights sped toward me and cut off the entrance to the alley.

Hazel climbed off the back of one bike.

Without saying a word, she dumped a bottle of liquid straight into my face.

“You bitch! Did you see my post?! Are you trying to ruin the birthday surprise I planned for Julian?!”

Pain exploded across my skin instantly.

My eyes burned so badly I couldn’t open them. Tears streamed uncontrollably down my face.

Blindly, I swung my arms through the air, trying to force them back.

“Hahahaha! Look at this idiot!” one guy laughed. “She thought it was acid or something! It’s just pepper spray!”

“Someone record this! Hazel said this little princess pissed her off!”

Hazel walked over and grabbed my jaw hard, forcing my head up.

“Keep acting superior now, goody two-shoes. You think going to some expensive private school makes you special? I know plenty of people who aren’t scared of consequences, and they all hate girls like you.”

Her nails dug painfully into my skin.

“I’m warning you one last time. Julian only wants me. Being in love with me is enough for him. So stop acting like some pathetic obstacle.”

Struggling, I shoved one hand into my pocket and hit the emergency shortcut on my phone.

Hazel still wasn’t done.

After clawing bloody marks into my arm, she ordered several guys to pin me down.

Then she sneered,

“Get on your knees and bark like a dog. Now.”

The shriek of police sirens tore through the night.

The bikers who’d been acting so fearless seconds ago panicked instantly and sped off in every direction.

I grabbed Hazel with everything I had and refused to let go until the police arrived.

In the end, both of us were taken back to the station.

After I finished giving my statement, Julian rushed in.
