He Gave His Password To Her And Lost His Future Chapter 04

The smile on Julian’s face instantly faded.

Not completely, but enough for everyone to notice.

Even when Hazel curled up against him acting cute, he barely reacted. He just picked up his glass and drained it in one go.

I guess it made sense.

A guy who’d spent his whole life being chased by me probably couldn’t handle hearing that I didn’t care anymore.

“Keep going, keep going!”

The awkwardness passed quickly, forgotten as the game continued.

The bottle spun again.

This time, it pointed at Julian.

Hazel immediately bounced up with a question ready.

“Do you believe love matters more than everything else?”

Julian glanced at me instinctively. When he realized I wasn’t even looking at him, he smirked and pulled Hazel closer.

“Obviously.”

Hazel kept pressing. “Like, more important than your future? Money? Career? Everything?”

The Reddit post flashed through my mind again.

My fingers tightened unconsciously around my glass.

Suddenly, I regretted wasting so much of senior year on Julian.

No good deed ever went unpunished.

“Yeah,” Julian answered easily. “You’re my treasure. Nothing in the world matters more than you.”

Hazel instantly turned bright red.

“Oh my God, stop. That’s so cheesy!”

She looped her arms around his neck, scooting even closer before kissing his cheek softly.

“Then let’s never break up, okay?”

Julian rubbed the top of her head indulgently.

“We won’t.”

Serena looked physically sick watching them flirt across the table. Leaning toward me, she muttered under her breath,

“Let’s see how long that lasts when he’s at MIT and she’s stuck at community college. Once people change environments, high school romance dies fast.”

Julian only smiled.

Meanwhile Hazel lifted her chin smugly and made a face at Serena.

“You don’t know shit. Love conquers everything. Just watch.”

By the time dinner ended, I was standing outside waiting for an Uber when Julian suddenly walked over and grabbed my arm.

“You’re really mad, huh? You obviously still…”

He didn’t finish the sentence.

But I knew exactly what he meant.

That I loved him.

That I’d loved him for years.

Loved him enough to lose myself. Enough to put him above everything else.

But when you handed someone your whole heart and they never treasured it, when they played with it carelessly and let it shatter on the ground without a second thought…

How could it ever go back to what it was before?

I pulled my arm away.

“I was immature back then,” I said lightly. “Couldn’t tell right from wrong. Couldn’t recognize people for who they really were.”

Julian stared at his empty hand for a second, then laughed instead of getting angry.

“Whatever. In a few months we’ll both be at MIT anyway. Same major, maybe even the same classes. Whether you want to deal with me or not, you’ll still be seeing my face every day.”

I smiled faintly.

“Guess we’ll see.”
