I Was Planning Our Wedding When He Told Me He Had a Wife Chapter 05

Jason stood up with me. “I’ll see you out!” Passing through a short hallway, he was stopped by a maid asking about the dinner menu. That left just Chloe and me.

I thought perhaps she was still unaware of the whole situation. No need to expose this ugliness. I was about to leave when the girl blocked my path slightly. The thin layer of timid ice in her eyes suddenly melted, a sneer curling at the corner of her mouth.

“Seen enough?” She lowered her voice a little. “You really think you can just waltz in and take my place? As long as I don’t agree, you’ll spend your whole life as a shady little secret, waiting to be ‘dealt with.’ Got it?”

I was slightly taken aback, feeling a touch of absurdity at her sudden change of face. But things had gone this far; I had no desire to get entangled.

She took half a step closer, her tone sharp as she blocked me. “I heard your mother’s been mailing out those invitations to everyone she knows. It’s pathetic. Who does that flaunting it when their daughter’s just the other woman?”

“Shut up!” I whirled around, my gaze fixed on her face like ice. I’d originally thought she was a victim like me, played by the same man. However much she hated me, cursed me, I could accept it. But dragging my mom into it? No.

She raised that young, pretty face of hers. “Did I say something wrong? Your mom’s just an old fool…”

Slap!

I didn’t hold back in the slightest. The girl’s head snapped to the side, tears quickly filling her eyes.

“You… you hit me?!” I took a step forward, staring her down. “You say one more word about my mother, just one and I swear I will ruin you.”

Jason came rushing at the sound. Seeing her red, swollen cheek, his eyes darkened. “Evelyn, you promised not to make things difficult for her.”

I met his gaze. “Ask her what she just said.”

The girl’s voice was thin and trembling. “Jason… I didn’t…”

A near-hysterical laugh caught in my throat. The switch was so fast, so flawless, it was almost impressive. I had no intention of indulging her.

I stated flatly, “She just called my mother a desperate fool trying to pawn her daughter off as a mistress. This is the ‘simple, harmless’ girl you’ve been protecting?” Jason took a deep breath. “Even if she said something inappropriate, you shouldn’t have hit her. When did you become so unreasonable?”

Unreasonable?

I looked at the way he shielded the girl behind him. The fire in my heart was instantly doused with ice water.

“She insults my mother, I teach her a lesson, and that’s unreasonable?” I laughed, tears suddenly welling up without warning, blurring my vision. “And what about you? Lying to her, lying to me, playing both sides for six damn years, what do you call that?”

“Enough!” He grabbed my wrist. “I’ve explained everything to you. What more do you want? Can’t you learn to accept things, be sensible like Chloe?”

He pinched the bridge of his nose, calming himself slightly. “Let’s talk calmly, okay? Don’t make a scene here. It’s… unsightly.”

Looking at that perpetually ‘rational’ face, I suddenly felt all this arguing was meaningless. I lifted my head, forcing the tears back. “Jason,” my voice regained its calm, “there’s nothing left to say between us.”

He paused slightly. “But you said the wedding…”

“That’s right. The wedding goes ahead.” My gaze swept over his gleefully dramatic ‘wife’ and landed on his face. “Don’t I deserve some closure for these six years?!”

Once, I’d so desperately wanted a wedding that announced our love to the world. Now, I was thankful it was just a formality. A performance that could end once the curtain fell.
