My Husband Sold My Innocence Fifteen Times Chapter 06

Liam’s first instinct wasn’t panic. He glanced at the caller ID, 

confirmed it was the police, and felt nothing but irritation. 

He almost laughed. 

So Audrey had actually managed to drag the police into her 

latest performance. Impressive. 

Ethan had heard every word. His pulse kicked up, and his 

breathing turned shallow. Something in his gut had been 

screaming at him all day. 

He’d had a bad feeling since morning, the kind that sits in 

your chest and refuses to let go. 

Ethan grabbed his coat. He was going to the station. He had 

to get there. 

Liam couldn’t have cared less. Chloe seemed calm enough, 

so he went with him, mostly out of curiosity about whatever stunt Audrey had pulled this time. 

At the station, a friend from the banquet was already waiting. The look on his face when he saw Ethan was enough to stop him in his tracks. 

“They still haven’t found her.” He held something out – a creased, worn photograph they’d found on the ground where she’d gone over. 

Ethan took the photo. His chest clenched so hard he thought he might throw up.

He recognized it instantly the three of them on Audrey’s eighteenth birthday, back when everything between them had still been whole. 

She’d treasured that photo like it was a piece of her own soul. She never would have left it behind unless she had never meant to come back. 

Liam stood off to the side, unmoved. To him, this was still 

theater Audrey trying to engineer their guilt, making sure 

– 

they paid attention. 

Then the officers led them into a back room and pulled up 

the surveillance footage. 

It was footage from the river. The moment it played, Liam’s face changed. Every trace of skepticism vanished in a single 

frame. 

Liam’s knees buckled, and he hit the floor like a puppet with 

its strings cut. Beside him, Ethan stood perfectly still, eyes 

fixed on the screen, tears streaming down his face in silence. 

On the screen, Audrey stepped off the fifteenth–floor ledge. 

and dropped toward the river without hesitating for even a 

second. 

The fifteenth floor. 

No one in that room needed to say it. Whether it was the fall 

or the water that killed her, she hadn’t wanted to survive 

either way. 

Liam was shaking his head over and over, as if denying it 

hard enough could make it untrue. 

“No no, that’s not possible. She’s pregnant – she was 

carrying our baby. She wanted that baby. She wouldn’t 

wouldn’t do this.”

“This is fake. It’s it’s Al or something. It has to be. Tell me 

it’s fake.” 

The officers kept telling him to calm down, but nothing they said was reaching him. 

Nothing could penetrate the denial. Ethan stood listening to Liam’s broken pleading, and his expression was hardening into something unbearable – grief twisting into rage. 

His fists were clenched so tight his knuckles were 

bone–white, his entire frame trembling. He swung before he even realized what he was doing, and his fist connected with 

Liam’s jaw. 

“This is your fault! You were so goddamn sure she wouldn’t 

do it. If you hadn’t called me back – if you’d let me get to 

that river she might still be alive.”

“You killed her.” 

Liam stayed on the floor and didn’t say a word back. The only sounds coming out of him were low and guttural, barely 

human. Officers rushed in to drag Ethan off him. 

It took four officers, and whatever was left of Ethan’s 

strength, to finally pull them apart. None of it mattered. No 

amount of punches or blame was going to bring her back 

out of that river. 

Then Liam broke. A sound ripped out of him – raw, animal 

grief and he started hitting himself, his open palm cracking 

against his own face again and again.

“It’s my fault too – I never should have pushed her. Blame 

me instead! Audrey – Audrey, where are you? I’m sorry. Come 

back. Please – I’m begging you, just come back.” 

“I won’t ever yell at you again. I won’t ever make you do 

anything you don’t want to. Just – please come back to 

me.” 

His sobs filled the room, huge and heaving, the kind of sound 

that made everyone in earshot look away. 

A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the room, broken 

only by his weeping.
