Back to the Day I Protected the Alpha Over My Mate Chapter 09 The Confrontation in the Gorge

On the day we set out, the sky was overcast.

As planned, I led guards to accompany Kane to the Starmist Pack for a covenant – signing.

Our convoy had five wolf-drawn carriages. Kane’s was in the middle, with two escort carriages in front and two behind. I was at the front, a silver dagger at my waist, scanning the surroundings,

But Kane wasn’t in the middle carriage.

Three days before, I’d convinced him to take an alternate route through the eastern Cangling Mountains, detouring via the Redvein Pack’s territory, then approaching the Starmist Pack from the south.

It added a day but ensured safety.

In the middle carriage was my deputy, Lane, wearing Kane’s wolf – skin coat and smeared with a herbal blend to mimic Kane’s pheromone scent. I’d tested it.

Three werewolves walked by Lane and said the Alpha’s scent was faint.

An Omega confirmed it was Kane.

Dylan wasn’t an Alpha, and in an ambush, no one would check the scent closely.

As we entered the gorge, the sun was setting.

This was “Throatcut Gorge”, with 100-meter- high cliffs on both sides and a narrow dirt road at the bottom, just wide enough for two carriages. The narrowest part was hard to turn around.

Our patrol map marked it as strategic – easy to defend, hard to attack, and away from regular patrol routes.

As we moved in, I smelled a mix of scents – earth, dead leaves, rocks, and subdued werewolf pheromones from multiple sources hidden in rocks and bushes.

I didn’t stop the convoy or raise an alarm.

My men had set up an encirclement above and at the entrance.

When we reached the narrowest part, rubble fell from above.

The convoy stopped, and guards growled.

I signaled the carriages to halt.

“Lara! Long time no see!”

A rough, shrill voice full of hatred came from above. I looked up and saw a figure in a dark gray cloak.

It was Dylan. He’d grown gaunt.

Behind him were over twenty half transformed werewolves from the Pale Moon Pack, his disposable pawns.

Dylan jumped down, blocking our way

He pushed back his hood, showing a scarred face,

‘Didn’t expect this? You thought kicking me out was the end?

‘ll get everything back, with interest.”I looked at him calmly.

‘Dylan, three years and you’re still stubborn.”His smile vanished, turning into a snarl.

‘Stubborn? Look around. I chose this gorge. I have men on both sides. You’re outnumbered. Reinforcements are coming. You and Kane are going to die here.”

‘Kane? You want to see him?”Dylan’s eyes lit up.

‘Make him come out! I want to see him grovel!”

told the guard, “Bring the Alpha.”Lane stepped out of the carriage, wearing Kane’s cloak, walking like Kane. Dylan stared at him.”Something’s wrong. You’re not Kane. Your scent’s off.”

_ane didn’t move. Dylan’s face changed color. He glared at me.”You – this is a trap?!”

‘Dylan, you haven’t changed in the Pale Moon Pack.”
