Back to the Day I Protected the Alpha Over My Mate Chapter 06 Proving Herself

I couldn’t have cared less.

The next morning, bright and early, I put on the Beta’s gear: a sleek, dark – gray wolf – skin armor, with a silver dagger and a Comms Stone attached to my waist.

I wrapped an old scarf around my neck to hide the scar Dylan left.

Entering the patrol watchtower, I saw two werewolves sitting inside.

They looked up, their eyes asking silently: “What are you doing here?”

“From today, I’ll be on shift with you,” I said, pinning my schedule to the wall.

“I’m off to the Northern Border Outpost.”

Silerice.

The younger werewolf, Lane, just curled his lip slightly.

A small move, but I got his meaning. Without a second look, I turned and left.

The Northern Border Outpost was the Graymoon Pack’s most secluded post, a three-hour walk from the main castle. There was a single stone house, a well, and an old wolf named Hagen.

He’d guarded the border for twenty years, limping from a silver – blade injury during a patrol.

“Are you the female Beta?” he asked when he saw me.

“Yes.”

“Got the patrol map?”

“Sure have.”

Hagen sized me up, then handed me the reins of an old wolf.

“Seventeen boundary markers along the Northern Border. Patrol twice a day.

Watch out for snakes in summer, avalanches in winter.

“If you meet enemies, call for backup, don’t fight.”

“Understood.”

That day, I did two patrols.

The first took four hours, the second three and a half.

I carefully noted the numbers, locations, and any damage of all seventeen markers.

Back at the outpost, I drew a new map, marking the distance and walking time between each.

Hagen studied the map in silence for a long white.”Did someone teach you this?”

“No.”

“Then how’d you do it?”

“I just knew I had to get it right.”Hagen rolled up the map, stuffed it in his pocket, and gave me a look, different from Lane’s three days ago.

A month later, I’d visited all outposts in the Southern, Eastern, and Western borders.

I redrew maps, re- measured routes, and re- checked supply lists.

I cleared out three-year-old moldy herbs in the warehouse, replacing them with fresh Moongrass and Bloodvine.

The outpost shift schedule was now an engraved wooden board, clearly showing who was on duty, when, and for which post. Whispers still existed, but they were quieter.

Sometimes in the cafeteria, a team member would sit across from me without a word.

knew they were starting to accept me, but pride held them back from admitting it.

On the last day of the third month, Elder Reddy visited the main castle. He checked the shift schedule, supply list, and new patrol maps in the duty room.

As he left, he told Kane, “Keep her.”

That night, Kane came to my door.

Moonlight stretched his shadow.”Your three-month probation’s over.”

‘Okay.”

‘Starting tomorrow, you’re the official Beta of the Graymoon Pack. Just Beta, not ‘female Beta”.”

I met his eyes and nodded. Kane turned to leave. After three steps, he stopped but didn’t turn around.

Moonlight shone on his shoulders like silver – white frost. I stayed at the door, watching him disappear.

The night breeze carried the smell of pine resin and earth from the Moonlight Forest.

I looked at my hands.

My knuckles were stronger, my palms had calluses, and there were herb traces under my nails.

These were signs of my hard-won journey.
