I barely slept.

I practiced Elara’s tone, expressions, and way of talking in the mirror for hours.

Before leaving, I changed into one of her outfits—a slip midi dress that clung softly to my frame.

I barely recognized myself.

Elara curled my hair and nodded approvingly.

“Wow. You actually look like me.”

Twenty minutes later, I arrived at Harbor Sushi & Grill, my hands clammy. I took a deep breath and pushed the door open.

The place wasn’t crowded.

I spotted him immediately.

He was slimmer than high school, his features sharper, more defined. He wore a thin black sweater, sleeves rolled up to his forearms.

He looked down at his phone, his jaw tight, cheekbones sharp and unchanging.

The same boy I’d known. And someone entirely new.

I hesitated at the door, my pulse thundering, then walked over.

My heart hammered so hard I thought it would burst out of my chest.

He looked up as I reached him.

Our eyes met.

My mind went completely blank. Every line Elara had drilled into me vanished in an instant.

He stood and pulled out my chair for me, his movements smooth, natural, polite.

It was a small gesture.

But it made my heart race even faster, my skin prickling.

I’d imagined this a thousand times in high school.

Sitting with him, talking, being together like a couple.

It had only ever been a fantasy.

Now it was real. But I was someone else.

Elias spoke first, his voice low and calm.

“Hi.”

“I’m Elara,” I said, my voice too high, too quick.

He studied me for a few long, endless seconds.

Then his mouth twitched into a faint, small smile—almost imperceptible.

When he handed me the menu, I blurted without thinking, “I don’t like wasabi.”

I regretted it instantly.

Elara loved wasabi.

I’d even seen an open bag of wasabi chips on her desk before I left.

Elias went strangely quiet, his expression unchanging.
