Elara threw her head back and laughed at my reaction, loud and amused.

“What else?”

“If we date online but never meet up, am I supposed to stay in this virtual romance forever?”

My mind was a bit confused.

“I—how am I supposed to do this?” I stammered.

“Just say you’re Elara,” she said, like it was the simplest thing in the world.

“But I’m not you.”

She rolled her eyes and flopped onto my bean bag chair, lazy and catlike

“He doesn’t know you. He’s never seen me. You go there, you are Elara.”

It sounded so casual, so easy.

Like pretending to be someone else on a date was nothing.

“What if he asks about you—about me?” I said, my voice tight with anxiety.

“I don’t know anything.”

“Then you cram right now,” she said, sitting up with sudden sharpness.

She pulled out her phone and started drilling me on the persona she’d used with Elias.

I didn’t absorb a single word.

My eyes were fixed on his plain black profile picture.

Elias Voss.

I’d added him secretly after high school. His profile only showed three days of posts, mostly empty scenery.

I thought we’d never cross paths again. But there his chat was, right in front of me.

Elias: [Can we meet tomorrow at 7 PM?]

A goofy, scratching puppy emoji followed.

I never would’ve pictured the stoic, unsmiling top student from high school sending something like that.

Sweet, sincere, nothing like I expected.

“Just lead him on a little,” Elara said, leaning in with a devious look. “Give him enough to get hooked, then pull back. Make him crave you.”

She leaned in and caught me staring off, her brows lifting in irritation.

“Were you even listening?”

I snapped back.

“I was.”

She crossed her arms, jaw set.

“Tell me what I just said.”

I went silent.

Elara sighed and handed me the phone.

“Whatever. Read the whole chat yourself.”

“You have until tomorrow night to learn it. Don’t let me flop. I’m counting on you, Lila.”

After saying this, she left to do her skincare routine.

I stared at the screen for a long time without a word.

Tomorrow at 7 p.m., I’d meet the boy I’d loved for five years—using someone else’s name.

Life really did love cruel jokes.
