Isabella went pale. She gripped the vanity to keep from falling.

“Stay here tonight,” she whispered. “On the sofa.”

I beamed. “Really, madam? Thank you!”

I curled up on the little sofa-softer than any bed I’d ever known-and pretended to sleep. But I

watched her through my lashes.

She stood over Sofia for a long time. Her hand hovered over the girl’s face. Her expression wasn’t

loving anymore. It was searching. Suspicious.

Neither of us slept that night.

The next morning, Alexander’s man arrived-a doctor in a white coat. Margaret was summoned.

“DNA tests?” she stammered. “Why?”

“Sofia needs a DNA tests for preschool,” Alexander said smoothly. “Standard procedure.”

“And… Ella?”

“Might as well give her a checkup. She’s too thin. Don’t want her getting Sofia sick.”

Margaret couldn’t argue. But her heart was sinking. She knew. *He suspects.*

Sofia screamed when they pricked her finger. Then they came to Isabella’s room.

Isabella didn’t seem surprised. She even hugged me before the doctor took my blood. Her arms were warm-smelled like roses. Nothing like Margaret’s sour, wine-stink.

I almost cried for real. But I held it together.

When the doctor left, Isabella gave me a chocolate. “Eat. It’ll help with the pain.”

I stared at it. “I can’t. Margaret says servants’ kids can’t take the family’s food.”

Isabella’s face crumpled. “From now on, you eat whatever you want. No one tells you otherwise.”

Sofia woke up and saw the chocolate. She shrieked, “That’s mine! You can’t give it to her!” She lunged for me.

Isabella looked exhausted. “Ella, go play outside for a bit.”

I slipped out, chocolate in hand, and smiled to myself.

The tide was turning.
