Chase just raised an eyebrow and flicked the cuffs with his 

finger. “Harper. You really went all out with this act.” 

Brittany covered her mouth and laughed. “Harper, you think 

hiring a few fake cops scares us? That’s so cute.” 

“Vance Industries owns this town.” 

The officers didn’t react. They just tightened their grip on 

Chase. “Please come with us.” 

When I didn’t say anything, Brittany shoved me aside and 

tried to pull at the officers‘ arms. “Harper, tell them to let go! 

You’re hurting him!” 

Now it was my turn to stand back and watch. 

“Chase, I gave the police everything you’ve been doing.” 

“Vance Industries rose fast. You really thought they never 

suspected?” 

Chase hung his head. His body trembled. 

I thought he was scared. Then he lifted his face and laughed. “Harper. I just had your dad scare you a little. And you’re this 

mad?” 

“There you go again. You only ever pretend to be tough to 

worry me.” 

He was so calm. So sure I’d hired actors. 

My heart jammed in my throat. Now I got it. This is why he cheated for years. Why he married Brittany. 

Because he thought I’d never leave. 

Ten years of marriage. I almost never fought with him. At 

worst, I’d sulk alone. 

He used to comfort me. Later years, he just left me there. Every time, I’d get over it myself and come back. 

So he had no fear. He kept using my deepest scars against

But not this time. 

Chase. I don’t love you anymore. 

“Harper. Get them to let me go. Brittany and Ethan are supposed to be on a cruise.” 

He tilted his head up, doing me a favor. “You’re just worked up. Calm down and you can still be Mrs. Vance. In name, anyway.” 

I laughed. “I don’t want it.” 

“What did you say?” 

He was surprised. Then laughed again. “Harper. You only get nasty when your back’s against the wall, don’t you? Brittany wanted to dig up your mom’s grave and build a playground on it. I told her no before. Now? Looks like I’m saying yes.” 

He still thought I was throwing a tantrum. 

He shoved at the officers. “Let go of me now, or I swear you won’t last one more day in Oakhaven.” 

Brittany was cursing under her breath too. 

One officer lost patience. He showed Chase the patch on his sleeve. “Look closely.” 

Then they pushed Chase toward the car. 

Chase had dealt with officials plenty of times. He recognized 

it instantly. Real, 

His eyes went wide. He looked back at me in disbelief. 

“You’re serious?”
