The Wife He Never Married, the Wife He Always Came Home To Chapter 04

I didn’t stay at the estate. It wasn’t my home anymore.

The staff had already started calling Brittany “Mrs. Vance.”

She left her lace thong outside the guest room like a flag. I could hear them through the wall.

When I walked out, the staff was talking about me.

“Harper really ended up as a joke. No marriage certificate, not even a wedding photo in this house.”

“Please. She just milks that sad backstory. I’m so sick of hearing it.”

“We’ve all been sending Brittany gifts behind her back. Harper never had a clue.”

“No certificate, all her kids dead. I heard Chase is gonna leave her with nothing.”

Nothing? We’ll see who leaves with nothing.

Next day I went out to clear my head. Been so buried in work, I hadn’t walked around in ages.

I was about to search for a place to eat when someone ripped my phone out of my hand and smashed it on the ground.

“You little bitch! I finally found you!”

My blood went cold. Old fear grabbed me. I stepped back. “Randy Quinn? What are you doing here? I’m warning you, this is Oakhaven. Don’t try anything.”

He spat on the ground and lunged, grabbing my hair. “You thought Chase was gonna save you? Guess who told me where you are?”

“I heard you never even got married. So what, you’re just his side piece now?”

He dragged out the words “side piece.” People on the street stared.

I tried to defend myself. “I am not his side piece!”

Randy slapped me across the face. “I don’t give a damn what you are. Your old man’s broke. Give me money.”

People gasped. Someone started to step in.

Then Brittany walked over, phone held up high. “Hey everyone! Look at this! This is my husband’s mistress and her deadbeat dad!”

“Yesterday she tried to get me fired from my own husband’s company! Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, does it?”

The people who wanted to help stopped. Their sympathy turned into disgust.

“She wanted my husband to throw me and my son out. Can you believe that?”

She lifted her bangs to show the cut on her forehead. Eyes shining. “She did this too.”

Then she shoved the phone in my face, smirking. “See what everyone’s saying about you in the comments.”

The captions rolled. “Slut.” “Bitch.” The words burned.

Randy stood there enjoying the show while Brittany grabbed my chin. “Your mom’s grave. Your kids’ graves. They’re on the edge of town, aren’t they?”

My heart stopped. “What are you going to do?”

She smiled, light and easy. “Right here. On your knees. Three slaps. Say you’re a shameless mistress. And I won’t do a thing.”

I clenched my fists. Bit my lip so hard I tasted blood.

Brittany opened her photo gallery. Showed me the cemetery.

“Your dad doesn’t want you. Chase doesn’t love you anymore. They’re the only people who ever cared about you, right?”

My mom’s last smile. My baby’s wrinkled little face. They flashed through my mind.

I didn’t care anymore. I dropped to my knees on the sidewalk.

I raised my shaking hand and slapped myself.

“I’m… a shameless mistress…”

People’s whispers scraped at my ears. Brittany laughed and got the phone right in my face.

When I stood up, I locked eyes with Chase. He’d been standing in the crowd, just watching. Cold.

I lost it. Screamed at him. Asked him why.

He just pushed me off like I was nothing. “Brittany was just joking around.”

Then sirens cut through everything.

Tactical officers swarmed in and cuffed Chase’s wrists. “Mr. Vance. You’re under arrest for trafficking illegal drugs.”
