He Built A Garden For Her Flowers But Only To Help His Secret Love Win A Prize Chapter 02

When I got back to the villa we lived in together, Charles was already having breakfast in the dining room.

He looked at me standing in the doorway, frowned slightly, stood up, and walked over to straighten my hair. “What’s wrong? Where were you last night? You didn’t answer my calls. I was so worried about you, Savannah.” He cupped my face in his hands, just like he’d done every single day for decades, so warm and gentle. “Is something going on lately? Do you need my help? Hmm? We can’t keep secrets from each other.”

But this face I’d looked at for decades now only made my stomach churn. I tilted my head slightly and pulled his hand away.

My attitude irked him, but he didn’t show it much.

“I missed my parents, so I went to visit their grave.”

He slipped an arm around my shoulders and comforted me softly. “After all these years, you still miss them this much? Savannah, when are you going to stop thinking about them?” He looked so completely calm, like he hadn’t been the man in the flowers the night before.

Then he said suddenly, “Oh right, I have something to tell you.”

I glanced at him, my guard going up. “What is it?”

“You won’t be able to go to the flower show. I had my assistant send your medical report to the doctor yesterday. Your heart won’t handle the plane ride. I can’t let you take that risk, Savannah.”

Connecting this to what I’d heard the night before, I cut him off sharply. “I know my own body better than anyone. You know this has been my parents’ wish and mine for so long! Charles!!”

I’d already made up my mind to leave, so I didn’t want to expose him and cause a scene. That was why I kept what I saw to myself.

“Savannah, I won’t let you risk your health like this. Just be good, okay? Your dream was to grow these flowers, wasn’t it? I know you don’t actually care about the prize.”

I forced myself to steady my breathing. “I’ll ask you one more time. Is this really for me? Or something else? Tell me the truth, Charles.” I held onto one tiny sliver of hope that he’d be honest with me. If he told me the truth, I’d leave peacefully. I’d even wish him and his new lover happiness, agree to a quiet divorce, and walk away with all my dignity intact. I’d already planned everything.

He looked at me with a confused expression. “Savannah, what are you talking about? Of course this is for you. Nothing matters more than you in my world, does it?”

Something inside me completely shattered.

That something I’d spent decades building up.

I had never felt so exhausted in my life.

Why? Why didn’t he even look the least bit guilty? How could he act so normal? How could he do this to me?

It made my entire breakdown feel like a stupid joke.

I forced myself to stay calm and said, “It doesn’t matter. Even if something goes wrong, I’m still going to the competition. You know, for my parents’ wish, I’d do anything.”

Truth be told, the competition didn’t matter to me anymore. I just wanted to find out just how far he’d go to hurt me for that woman, after decades together.

I wanted to see what plan he had.

Was he going to kill me?

People were always masochistic like that. We craved the ugly truth, no matter how much it hurt.

I saw a flash of malice in Charles’ eyes the second I said those words. It was gone in an instant, but it still cut right through me.

He smiled and patted my shoulder. “Let’s put this unpleasant talk aside for now. Come eat. Your health’s already not great, it’ll get worse if you don’t eat.”

“I’m not hungry. Go ahead, I’m going to stay at the hillside villa for a few days.”

“Eat, Savannah.” His irritation finally broke through, and he spoke to me in a commanding tone.

I ignored him, turned around, went upstairs to pack my things, left for the hillside villa, closed the door, and fell straight into bed.
