[Baby, did you get the gifts?] 

[I got them. Thank you, hubby. The necklace and bag are both 

so pretty. I love them.] 

They were just too expensive. 

The pressure was huge. 

I couldn’t afford to pay him back. 

I stood in front of the full–length mirror and took several 

pretty photos, then sent them to him. 

Unexpectedly, he didn’t praise how pretty the necklace looked 

on me or how good the bag looked. 

Instead, he said, [Nice outfit.] 

That leap in thinking left me briefly silent. 

[Baby must carry my feelings with you every day.] 

I immediately sent a puppy nodding emoji to reassure him. 

The necklace my dear hubby gave me, I would never take off except when showering or sleeping.

and he already bought you gifts that expensive. Why can’t I meet a rich guy?” 

“Don’t you have a twenty–year–old puppy? You’re getting your meal tonight, and you’re still jealous of me?” 

“You should work hard too. Meet up soon.” 

Amy gave me a silly grin and took out her phone to start her 

love–filled morning call. 

The morning was busy again. 

Near lunchtime, my mentor brought me a document and asked me to take it to the Executive Office for a signature. 

This time, I had learned. 

I read it carefully three times, not missing even a punctuation 

mark. 

No matter what Mr. Scrooge asked, I would not be afraid. 

When I reached the door of the Executive Office, a familiar 

scolding voice came from inside again. 

“Mr. Lee, why are Sales‘ travel expenses this month three times higher than last month? Did you look into it, or are you waiting for me to investigate it myself again?” 

“Ms. Chen already signed off on it.” 

Deputy Finance Manager Richard Lee didn’t dare say it too clearly. Sweat covered his forehead. 

“So if Ms. Chen signs something, you don’t review it, ask about it, or investigate it? Then what do I need Finance for? Or are you planning to jump ship to Chen’s?” 

Charlotte Chen was the youngest female department head in 

our company.

Gorgeous, bold, and highly capable. She was the dream girl of many male coworkers.

I heard Charlotte had come to Locke for Mr. Locke. 

Old Mr. Locke was said to be interested in making her his daughter–in–law.

Another was Flynn Lockwood, the chief technical director who ranked below only one person and above everyone else. He

Mrs. Locke. 

But Mr. Locke didn’t seem very satisfied with Charlotte. He even found fault with his rumored girlfriend. 

When Manager Lee came out and saw me, he froze for a 

second. 

“You’re Lily from HR?” 

Good heavens. 

Even he knew my name? 

HR and Finance weren’t on the same floor. We were far apart. 

I nodded like a stunned fool, adjusted my emotions, and 

walked in. 

Mr. Scrooge’s eyes moved over me for two seconds, then

After a long while, he curved his lips and said, “The necklace is 

beautiful.”

I was done for. 

As if struck by some serious disease, I shivered and hugged the documents tightly. 

“My, my boyfriend gave it to me.”

After saying that, he curved his lips again. 

I quickly handed him the document. 

My palms were sweating from nerves. I kept silently reciting 

the important contents of the file. 

Just as I prepared for the worst and raised my head, ready to

behind it. 

I spent the entire day in nervous suspicion. 

“Amy, if a man suddenly starts asking after you and becomes polite, do you know why?” 

“He either wants something from you, or he’s into you.” 

Amy didn’t even raise her head. She kept typing. 

There were only thirty minutes until clock–out. She had a hard battle tonight and didn’t want overtime.

The speaker was Helen from South District Sales. She had 

joined the same day as me, and we’d chatted a few times in the

“Yes. My boyfriend gave it to me.”
