Her Best Friend Bragged Online About Having A Secret Family With Her Man Chapter 04

“Daddy! I want to go on the carousel!”

A crisp, high-pitched child’s voice came from not far behind me.

“Okay, okay. Daddy will go on whatever you want to play.”

The man’s tender, doting voice was like a poisoned blade, piercing my eardrums with precision.

Julian Thorne.

Even in a noisy crowd, even if it was just a short sentence coaxing a child, there was no way I could mistake that voice.

I turned around stiffly. Through the bustling crowd about fifteen yards away, I saw them.

It was a scene that was both incredibly piercing and incredibly harmonious.

Julian was wearing a casual white button-down, sleeves rolled up to reveal that scarred wrist.

He was looking down at a little boy, about three years old, dressed in a bear outfit. His face was full of fatherly smiles.

Cassie stood beside him in a pale yellow sundress, her long hair draped over her shoulders. With light, sophisticated makeup, she was using a tissue to wipe sweat off the little boy’s face.

The way she looked at Julian was filled with love and dependency.

They stood there—the handsome man, the beautiful woman, the adorable child. Anyone seeing them would have complimented them: What a happy family.

I stood rooted to the spot, feeling all the surrounding noise fade away.

I thought I had prepared myself. I thought I had exhausted all my heartache on the drive over.

But when this bloody truth—these living, breathing people—stood before me, I realized that the pain of being betrayed by those I loved most was beyond words.

It felt as if someone had reached into my chest, crushed my heart into pieces, and then stuffed the raw meat back into place.

I followed them from a short distance, masochistically watching their family fun all day long.

Until I was numb.

In the afternoon, the child started fussing for ice cream. Julian turned to go wait in line.

Cassie held the child’s hand, waiting for him under the shade of a tree.

The little boy held a red rubber ball, bouncing it on the ground out of boredom.

Suddenly, the ball slipped from his hand and rolled away, heading straight toward me.

Cassie was looking down at her phone and didn’t notice the ball had escaped.

The red ball stopped right at the tip of my shoe.

The little boy ran up to me, panting.

He was truly beautiful. His eyes were exactly like Julian’s, but his nose and mouth were Cassie’s.

The little boy looked up at me with his clear, large eyes and said in a milky voice:

“Pretty lady, can you give me back my ball?”

I took a deep breath, slowly crouched down, picked up the red ball, and handed it to him.

“Thank you, pretty lady!” The boy took the ball happily, flashing a bright smile.

“Miles! Don’t run off!”

In the distance, Cassie finally realized the child was gone. She looked around anxiously.

When her gaze swept through the crowd and landed on the boy with the ball, she sighed in relief.

Then, her eyes followed the boy to me, still crouching in front of him.

I slowly stood up, took off my sunglasses, and calmly met her gaze.
