My Don Forgot Who Gave Him Everything Chapter 03

My Don Forgot Who Gave Him Everything Chapter 03

He had only heard from his assistant that I had been in a car accident, and he had simply assumed I had suffered a few scratches.

He never asked how long I had been hospitalized.

He never noticed that something was wrong with the way I walked.

He never realized that, on nights when the pain kept me from sleeping, I massaged my numb calf over and over alone.

Ever since I was injured, he had either been busy with work or off meeting Lila in secret.

How could he have had any energy left to notice me?

“How my leg is doing has nothing to do with you.”

I calmly pushed his hands away.

“Don’t forget. We’re already getting divorced.”

Matteo’s face darkened visibly.

At that moment, Lila suddenly began to cry.

Her tears came fast, as if she had practiced them countless times.

“Elena, I’ve always wanted to apologize to you.”

“I kept telling Matteo to appreciate you and treat you well. Everything turned out this way because of me. If you want to hit me, yell at me, or do anything else to me, I’ll accept it.”

She cried in a perfectly helpless, wounded way, making me look like the cruel, aggressive one.

I looked at her, my tone flat.

“First of all, I’m an only child.”

“Second, this is not your acting class. No matter how well you perform, Matteo is the only person here you can fool.”

“And last, your acting really isn’t that good.”

Lila stiffened slightly. Then she covered her stomach and looked at Matteo as if she had been terribly wronged.

Concern immediately surfaced in Matteo’s eyes.

He pulled her into his arms, wiping her tears while looking at me.

“Elena, the divorce won’t be final for another twenty-nine days.”

“You know my temper. Don’t even think about starting anything.”

“If you insist on making this ugly, you’ll be the only one who ends up humiliated.”

I did not argue with him any further.

That day, with Rowan handling the arrangements, the procedure went smoothly.

When I was wheeled out of the operating room, I vaguely thought I saw a familiar figure standing at the end of the hallway.

But I was too weak.

My eyelids were unbearably heavy.

Before I could confirm anything, I had already been wheeled back to the hospital room.

After the procedure, Matteo never received another call from me, nor did he get another message.

I became as quiet now as I had once been clingy.

A week later, Matteo came back to our Manhattan apartment reeking of alcohol, with Lila beside him.

He kissed her from the foyer all the way to the master bedroom.

Unfortunately for them, I was changing in the walk-in closet.

After I finished getting dressed, I walked over to them.

“Excuse me. I need to go out.”

The air seemed to freeze.

When Matteo saw me, he instinctively let go of Lila.

He turned his head, his voice low.

“Lila, go outside first.”

Lila lifted her eyes and glared at me, then obediently turned and walked out of the bedroom.

While I turned around to choose a handbag, Matteo came up behind me without a sound.

He stretched both arms forward and trapped me between the cabinet and his body.

“Elena, dressed like this in the middle of the night? Which man are you going to see?”

His voice was thick with alcohol and mockery.

“Didn’t know a woman I was done with still had this many takers.”

It was just a top and a short skirt, the kind of outfit you could see anywhere on the street.

How did it become so filthy in his mouth?

And there was that phrase, “a woman I was done with.”

When had this man become this shameless after I had already let him keep his dignity? I could not believe I had never noticed before.

I shoved him.

He did not budge.

So I stopped being polite.

I slapped him hard across the face.

“What exactly do you mean by ‘like this’?”

“Matteo Rinaldi, is this how you were raised?”

“Don’t forget, the divorce isn’t final yet. As long as I change my mind, Lila will still have to stay a sidepiece you can’t bring into the light.”

While he was still stunned from the slap, I shoved him away and strode out of the walk-in closet.

In the living room, Lila was holding a glass of water, the corners of her eyes still red.

“Elena, you look so beautiful,” she said softly. “Do you have a date? I didn’t expect you to move on so quickly…”

She trailed off deliberately.

Matteo clenched his jaw, as if he was about to say something insulting again.

I casually took the glass from Lila’s hand and splashed the warm water over her lips.

“If you keep running that filthy mouth, next time I won’t just be rinsing it out for you.”

My phone rang.

I answered the call and walked toward the door in a rare good mood.

Matteo followed me with a cold expression.

He watched with his own eyes as I got into a silver sedan and left without looking back, leaving him with nothing but exhaust.
