He Gave Her the Ring I Wanted. I Gave Him Hell. Chapter 05

The knife hit the floor with a sharp clang. 

The world fell completely silent for a few seconds. 

Leo stared at his hand, still frozen in shock. 

“Angie, I didn’t mean to.” 

I struggled to push myself up, fixing my cold gaze on him. 

“You didn’t mean to?” 

“Leo, how do you have the nerve to say that?” 

“You must be thrilled, right? Having a fool like me stay by your side through eight years of hardship.” 

“From beginning to end, Sophia is the only one you ever loved.” 

He wanted to argue, but no words came out. 

Sophia stepped forward, clutching her arm. “She tried to kill me! Leo, call the cops and lock her up!” 

Leo frowned, glancing between me and her. “What exactly happened here?” 

She stammered, “I just came to talk…” 

As expected, he began to hesitate again. 

Tears of laughter spilled over my cheeks. 

I looked at this face I had loved for eight years. 

“Save your words for the police.” 

I climbed into the ambulance with my mother. 

Leaning against the hospital wall, all the strength was drained from my body. 

My cheek throbbed with pain, and my lip was split open. 

But I couldn’t care about that, keeping my eyes glued to the emergency room door. 

A nurse handed me a bill. “Family member, please settle the 

payment.” 

I pushed myself off the wall, my legs shaking like jelly. 

A hand reached out and took the paper away. 

Leo avoided my eyes. “Stay here. I’ll take care of it.” 

I wanted to stop him, but I was a step too late. 

He walked away quickly, his back disappearing down the 

hallway. 

I remembered years ago when my father was sick, he used to 

run around handling things just like this. 

I had truly believed he was my safe harbor. 

The police arrived. 

“Who is Angie? Are you the one who called?” 

I straightened up against the wall. “Sophia came to my home 

to harass us. I have security footage.” 

The officer took down notes, and an older cop looked at me. 

“The mark on your face?” 

Leo stood a short distance away, holding the receipt. 

I said, “It’s nothing. She didn’t do it.” 

The police left, and he stepped up to me. “Angie, I…” 

Before he could finish, the emergency room doors swung 

open. 

“The patient is stable for now. We’re moving her to the ICU for 

twenty–four hours of observation. Go complete the 

paperwork.” 

My racing heart settled halfway, only to tighten again. 

Outside the ICU doors. 

Leo spoke up. “I’m sorry, Angie. I didn’t know things would 

end up like this.” 

I stood up and slapped him across the face with everything I 

had. 

My hand stung from the impact, and his head snapped to the 

side. 

The passing nurses glanced over but hurried along. 

He stayed in that position, not moving for several seconds. 

I continued, my voice trembling with every syllable. 

“What did you know? The night my mother was hospitalized 

last time, you were boasting about your games at a barbecue 

joint.” 

“For eight years, you did nothing but brush me off with 

‘wait.“” 

“You knew exactly how much I sacrificed for you, but you 

chose to play blind.” 

My hand went numb as a red mark formed on his cheek. 

“She told me you two are getting married, that the apartment 

is under her name.” 

“She said my eight years with you were nothing but a joke.” 

“Never stick around for a man to grow up. The price is just too 

high.” 

“I waited from age twenty–four to thirty–two. I waited until 

my father died, and I never saw a wedding dress.” 

“You want to give her security, but what about me? What am I to you?” 

His eyes welled with tears. “Angie, I…” 

I leaned back against the wall, trying to catch my breath. 

“Did you watch that video? She said you two have been 

together for a long time.” 

“My mother is lying in there. She can’t handle a third stroke.” 

“Leo, if my mother doesn’t wake up, who do I hold responsible?” 

His face turned deathly pale. 

I shook my head. “Hold you responsible? I needed thirty 

thousand dollars, and you told me to wait until tomorrow.” 

He tried to explain. “I transferred that money.” 

I shrieked, “By the time you transferred it, I had already begged six friends and made over a dozen phone calls!” 

“And I was still making excuses for you!” 

“I gave you every penny and all my energy, and what did I get 

in return?” 

The ICU door opened, and a nurse called out, “Angie, your mother is awake. She wants to see you.” 

I stepped inside. 

He called out from behind, “Angie, I can explain.” 

I didn’t turn back. 

“I don’t need it anymore.” 

On the hospital bed, my mother looked incredibly frail. 

“Mom.” 

I squeezed her cold hand. 

She strained to open her eyes, trying to offer comfort. 

I said, “It’s fine. I can handle it.” 

Her fingers twitched slightly, gently brushing against my 

cheek. 

The touch was so faint. 

I buried my face in the edge of the bed and wept like a child.
