By the time Mrs. Thornton walked away satisfied, Victoria hadn’t gotten a single word in. 

I turned to get a glass of champagne. She followed quietly 

behind me. 

“You think he made you apologize to me because he didn’t believe you?” 

I paused. She thought she’d hit a nerve. 

“He always knew I set you up. So what? I cried to him, and he forgave me anyway.” 

“Shut up.” 

Victoria went pale and spun around. 

Christopher pushed past her. 

“Emma, let me explain. It wasn’t like that. I found out later 

that…” 

His voice trailed off, but my expression didn’t change. He pulled at his hair. 

“I know I screwed up. I regretted it a long time ago.” 

“Divorce him, and I’ll marry you. Okay?” 

Victoria shrieked. “Christopher! I’m right here! How can you say that to another woman?” 

Christopher ignored her. He just kept looking at me, hope flickering in his eyes. 

I laughed. “I really don’t know where you get the confidence 

to keep asking me that.” 

His eyes turned red. His voice cracked. “Why not? You loved me so much back then!” 

“So you knew. And you still never believed me. Not once.” 

“I did believe you. I just thought there would be more time. If you’d just waited a little longer-” 

“So I’m supposed to take all the pain. All the humiliation. What made you think I would wait?” 

Christopher shook his head. He couldn’t get a word out. 

Michael stepped in front of me, gripping his glass so hard it might shatter. 

I patted his arm gently and looked at Christopher one more 

time. 

“Please don’t come back. Okay?” 

Christopher seemed to deflate all at once. His shoulders caved 

in.
