I shuffled to the door in my slippers, and Ethan stumbled in, stinking drunk.

His secretary, struggling under his weight, shot me a look from under her lashes, then smoothed her bangs in a way that was meant to be seductive.

“Lila, Ethan’s wasted,” Chloe said, emphasizing the “I” deliberately, speaking as naturally as if she owned the place,

“Could you make him some sobering tea? Skip the cinnamon—he hates it.”

She then smiled shyly,

“He always has it the morning after a bender.”

I almost laughed.

The whole territorial display from a fresh graduate was so clumsy, I couldn’t even be bothered to engage.

I took Ethan from her, my voice calm,

“Sure, thanks. Want me to call you an Uber?”

“Really, Ethan? Leaving a pretty girl like you to walk home alone at night,” I added, glancing at Chloe.

Chloe’s face darkened, and she fell silent.

I didn’t bother with more small talk, closing the door behind her. I kicked Ethan lightly where he slouched on the couch.

“Cut the act.”

Ethan didn’t open his eyes, but his voice held no trace of drunkenness,

“Thanks.”

“She’s been way too clingy lately, always dropping hints about marriage. Thought I’d let her sweat a little.”
