He Ordered My Torture, Then Said I Love You Chapter 09

“Jade died in prison.”

When I heard the news, I was in the rehabilitation room,

squeezing a therapy ball to rebuild my grip. The ball kept slipping from my fingers, and every time it hit the floor, I picked it up again.

It was exhausting, but I refused to quit. The doctor said there was still a chance I could get it back.

Julian snorted. “She got what she deserved.”

I nodded, feeling nothing in particular. She meant nothing to me anymore, so why should I care?

“What about Arthur?” I asked, keeping my voice light.

Julian hesitated, something tight crossing his face.

“After he signed the divorce papers, he dissolved the company. Donated whatever was left to a disability foundation in your

name.”

“Then he went back to that abandoned warehouse.”

The ball slipped from my hand and skittered across the floor.

“Why would he go back there?”

“I don’t know.” Julian shook his head.

“Someone saw him sitting there for three days straight. No

food. No water.”

“And then… he turned himself in.”

“He turned himself in?” I stared at Julian.

“Yes.” Julian sighed.

“I was planning to make him suffer for years. Didn’t expect him to make it that easy.”

“And before they took him in, he ruined his own right hand and left leg.”

My head jerked up, and I searched Julian’s face for any sign he

was messing with me.

“What did you say?”

“He took a hammer to his own right hand. Smashed it until there was nothing left but a bloody pulp.”

“Then he let a car roll over his leg.”

“Shattered it. The doctors said he’ll never walk on it again.”

I didn’t feel the satisfaction Julian had expected. Instead, I

doubled over and threw up.

Julian panicked and rushed me to the hospital. The

psychiatrist diagnosed me with severe PTSD.

Any more shock to my system, she warned, and I could become a danger to myself.

When I came to, Julian couldn’t stop apologizing.

“I’m sorry. I never should have told you any of that.”

After I was discharged, I was a mess. A heavy sadness weighed on my chest, and my mind kept drifting somewhere dark.

Julian never left my side.

One night, I got up to get a glass of water. I’d just reached for a glass when I heard Julian behind me, his voice trembling.

“Claire!”

“Claire…”

He moved toward me slowly, then seized my hand.

“Julian… what are you doing? I was just getting water…”

Before I could finish, Julian pulled me into his arms and held

on tight.

“I… I can’t breathe!”

I pushed him back just enough to see his face, and found his

eyes red and brimming with tears.

“I’m scared… Claire, you’re all I have.”

“Promise me you won’t leave me. Please.”

It was the first time he’d ever broken down in front of me.

Something loosened in my chest at that moment, just a little.

I reached up and patted his shoulder, and nodded. “Okay.”
