Blind Heiress Kissed The Mad Regent Chapter 08

My eyes fluttered open. I instinctively felt my chest, my body weak but free of searing pain. A breath of relief escaped me. Okay. I’m not dead. My hard-earned, luxurious life is safe.

I pushed myself up, expecting concern and warm greetings. Instead, I was met with grim faces and complicated stares.

I frowned. “What’s wrong with all of you?”

“Elara, there’s no point pretending anymore,” Marlowe stepped forward, her face draped in fake pity. “Everyone knows about your plot to murder the Regent. The stable hand already confessed everything.”

I blinked, then let out a calm laugh of realization. “Wait, you mean those snakes in the chest? That wasn’t

If I actually wanted Silas dead, why would I go through all that trouble? I could’ve just found an opening
and stabbed him. Way more efficient.”

I shot Marlowe a flat look. “Besides, that chest with the venomous snakes wasn’t even my chest. It was

yours.”

“Nonsense!” Marlowe shrieked, cutting me off.

Unfazed, I continued slowly, “I know my own wedding chests. All eighty-one of them. Every single one’s

stamped with the Voss family crest, made from top-shelf wood. The chest you all just pried open was some old storage trunk they dragged out of the warehouse.”

“The chest you all just pried open was some old storage trunk dragged out of the warehouse, the one

Marlowe used to keep her little trinkets in as a kid. It was beat up and outdated, so in the wedding rush, somebody just slapped a coat of red paint on it.”

“I might be reckless, but I’m not stupid enough to pass off a piece of junk as one of my wedding chests and humiliate myself in public.”

I rolled my eyes. My vision might be terrible, but I wasn’t blind in the mind. I’d seen through Marlowe’s clumsy frame-up from the start. She wanted me dead, so I wasn’t going to hold back anymore.

I picked at my ear and went on. “I was out cold, but I heard every word you said outside this room. Me and

the stable hand, some big secret love affair? Riding half a dozen horses to death racing up to Rural Northern County? That whole story’s full of holes. It’s a joke.”

“That stable hand never meant anything to me. The one he was always sneaking around with at night was

you, Marlowe.”

I pointed a finger straight at her. Every gaze in the room snapped to her face. Mother and Father stared in

disbelief.

Marlowe’s scream was raw. “You’re slandering me! None of that happened!”

“Whether it happened is easy to prove,” I said calmly. “Go ahead, let the guards tear his room apart. Check

under the mattress. You’ll find every letter you two ever swapped. All the details. Your little secret meetups, the whole plan to set me up, it’s all right there.”

I’d walked in on their grubby little affair more than once. Their meeting spot wasn’t far from my courtyard, and the noise every night made it impossible to sleep. After enough times, my curiosity got the better of me and I’d looked closer. They were so wrapped up in each other, they never noticed me. “You want me to spell out every detail?”

Before Marlowe could even react, the guards were already on their way. They soon returned with a stack of letters, passing them around the room. The last one, the clearest, was dated half a month ago.

Marlowe had written to the hand, telling him to hide at her country property for two weeks and then claim he’d gone to Rural Northern County to hunt the snake. Then he was to follow the script and frame me. It was a perfect, two-birds-one-stone plan to eliminate me while also dumping her deadweight lover.

Marlowe lunged for the letters like a madwoman, hysterical. “These are forged! She’s setting me up!” Panic

seized her.

“If the stable hand never went to the Northern County, then how do you explain the snakes in the chest?!”

I leaned back on the bed, a cold smile curling my lips. “Simple. To get your hands on venom that rare, someone had to deliver it straight to you in the Capital without it costing you a dime. And the person who

brought you those snakes? I know her very, very well.”
