My Husband Died Twice And Both Times He Lied Chapter 07

As they spoke, the calculation in Maya’s eyes grew deeper. 

“Mom, Dad, Evelyn may have run off with Chase. When she 

comes back, please don’t treat her like this anymore. Isn’t keeping our family happy and healthy what matters most?” 

Happy and healthy? 

Standing in the doorway, Gavin suddenly could not 

understand those words. 

If Evelyn was truly gone, as the man on the phone had said, could he and Maya really be together with any dignity? 

Could he truly face her with a clear conscience? 

While he was thinking, Maya’s delighted voice rang out. 

“Honey! Why are you standing at the door? We were all talking about Evelyn. What about you? Didn’t you say you called the police? Has Evelyn come back?” 

Gavin frowned tightly and suddenly asked, “How do you know 

Chase Collins?” 

Maya blinked guiltily, but she still pretended to look innocent 

and sweet. 

“Chase? I saw him downstairs at the hospital a few days ago.” 

“Maya.” Gavin’s voice turned cold. 

“Tell the truth.” 

Maya’s face went deathly pale. 

When Mr. Bennett Sr. and Mrs. Bennett Sr. saw their 

son–in–law’s harsh attitude, the amused, spectator–like looks 

fell from their faces at once. 

“Gavin, what is that supposed to mean? Maya gave birth to your son. Is this how you usually treat her?” 

Mrs. Weston Sr. had not expected her son to lose his temper like this today either. Uneasy, she grabbed his arm. 

“Gavin, tell me the truth. Did you see Evelyn? Is she trying to force you to leave Maya?” 

Gavin’s heart grew colder and colder. 

He had not said a single word, yet they had already cast him as 

the worst kind of villain. 

They had not even given him a chance to explain. 

The scene suddenly reminded him of Evelyn a few days earlier, 

when everyone had cornered her the same way. 

She had wanted to explain, yet she had been powerless and 

alone. 

Gavin’s heart lurched into panic. 

With a dark expression, he walked up to Maya and yanked her 

off the bed. 

“Maya, I’ll give you one more chance.” 

Under everyone’s pressing stares, Maya grew so nervous that 

she could only stammer. 

“I… I think I saw a man. He and Evelyn were being intimate in 

public, and I thought it didn’t look right. That was why I got 

anxious.” 

Gavin let go of her, but there was no relief in his eyes, only devastation and despair. 

He had just checked the security footage. From three years ago until now, everyone who had come into contact with Evelyn at 

the hospital had been an ordinary patient. 

Evelyn was an OB–GYN, and most of the patients she dealt 

with every day were women. 

There were very few men in the footage at all. 

The footage had even included another recording from his 

mother’s hospital room. 

With his own eyes, he had seen Evelyn endure his mother’s 

cruelty and the deception of the parents who had raised her. She performed surgeries until two in the morning every day, 

yet still worked tirelessly to investigate the truth behind his 

supposed death. 

She had stayed up late reading dense, difficult legal statutes by lamplight. 

And during those three years, she had taken care of his mother 

with painstaking attention. She wiped her mouth, fed her, 

washed her clothes, and handled every small task flawlessly. 

On the bigger matters, no one could find fault with her either, 

even though she was draining her own already fragile body to 

the point of collapse. 

Gavin’s eyes were frighteningly red. The others sensed 

something was wrong and immediately pressed him with questions. 

“Gavin, did you see Evelyn? What did she say to you?” 

Gavin murmured hollowly, “Evelyn Bennett is dead.” 

Dead? 

The word hit everyone in the room like a missile strike to the 

chest. 

Mrs. Bennett Sr., especially, went dark before her eyes the 

moment she heard it. She dropped to her knees and let out a howl of pain. 

Grief swallowed her whole. Refusing to believe it, she 

screamed herself hoarse. 

“That’s bullshit! Evelyn, that brat, has been clever since she 

was little. At five, she tricked us during hide–and–seek. At 

twelve, she beat Tommy Walsh from next door until his face 

swelled up like a balloon. She started dance lessons at three, 

piano at seven, and she became brilliant at medicine too. 

Evelyn would never give up on life like that!” 

But Gavin still heard the despair in her voice. 

Mr. Bennett Sr. said nothing. He only kept clutching his chest, taking emergency heart pills one after another. 

Mrs. Weston Sr. sank dazedly to the floor. She almost lost her 

grip on the baby in her arms and kept muttering to herself. 

“No. Evelyn may have made mistakes, but she would never kill 

herself.” 

Only Maya did not cry or scream. 

Instead, she was terrifyingly calm. 

Gavin understood.
