Died heroically in the line of duty? 

Those words hit Gavin like a bolt from the blue. 

He could not process it. He asked again, repeating himself. 

“What did you say? Died in the line of duty? Dr. Bennett? Did you get the wrong person? Evelyn is on a business trip. How could she have been part of some medical experiment?” 

The staff member on the other end paused. Five minutes later, 

an older man took the call. 

“Mr. Weston, correct? Dr. Bennett mentioned you to me 

before. I’m sorry to inform you that this project was dangerous from the beginning. As the first doctor with the courage and conviction to participate in this ischemic stroke clinical research trial, Dr. Bennett will be posthumously 

awarded our highest honor for distinguished service. We will 

also contact Riverton to arrange the formal recognition.” 

“She has already been cremated. As for final words, her 

passing was sudden, and she did not leave much behind. However, your divorce from Dr. Bennett was not fully 

finalized. Her attorney will be contacting you soon.” 

With that, the call ended without warning. 

Gavin froze. 

The sun was blazing outside, but he felt as cold as ice from 

head to toe. 

A chill seemed to rise from the soles of his feet and seep into 

his heart. 

Suddenly, his mouth twisted, and he muttered to himself. 

“Fake. Evelyn, do you hate me this much? Are you really 

willing to lie to me just so you can run away with your new boyfriend?” 

Even as he said it with disdain, Gavin’s hand was already 

dialing the number again. 

But no one answered. 

He called again, and the call was declined. 

He called again, and it was declined again. 

He repeated it twenty–two times. Every call went unanswered. 

At last, he slammed his fist into the hard wall. Blood poured 

from between his knuckles. 

Yet he felt no pain at all. His eyes stayed fixed on the phone 

screen. 

Thinking of the man named Chase Collins, Gavin suddenly let 

out a humorless laugh and called his executive assistant. 

“Three minutes. Find me everything on Chase Collins.” 

Three minutes later, his assistant called back, sounding 

cautious and uncertain. 

“Mr. Weston, could there be a mistake? There is no Chase Collins in Riverton who matches that person at all.” 

As if afraid Gavin would question his competence, the executive assistant quickly emphasized it again. 

“I even ran a nationwide database search. Aside from 

unrelated namesakes, no one named Chase Collins has come 

to Riverton in the past three years.” 

“How is that possible?” Gavin clenched his jaw so hard his teeth nearly cracked. “Maya told me herself. She said she saw 

Chase coming to the hospital every night these past few days. Didn’t Evelyn have a baby with him too? I mean that dead 

bastard.” 

The assistant did not dare say anything else. He only reminded 

Gavin to ask Maya. 

As Gavin spoke, his surging emotions suddenly cooled. 

All this time, he had believed whatever Maya told him. 

Evelyn seemed to have tried to explain it to him before. She 

had said the embryo was their child. 

The stubbornness and disbelief in her eyes back then had even 

stung him. 

But he had only thought she was mocking him, trying to get 

revenge because he had fallen in love with her best friend. 

At that thought, his heart began to pound with deeper unease. 

He sped all the way to the hospital. In the hospital room, Maya 

was surrounded by Mr. Bennett Sr., Mrs. Bennett Sr., and Mrs. 

Weston Sr. 

“Maya, have some more chicken soup. You just gave birth to a 

healthy baby boy. You need to build your strength back up.” 

“That’s right, Maya. That damned girl Evelyn tormented you 

so much lately that you couldn’t even sleep. When I find her, 

I’m going to teach her a real lesson. I don’t know what 

happened to everything we taught her all these years. 

Only Mr. Bennett Sr. still had a bit of conscience left. He let out 

a heavy sigh. 

“Linda, this was your fault from the start. You can’t indulge 

this young couple and let them deceive Evelyn just because 

you feel you owe Maya. Evelyn grew up right in front of us. She 

came into our home when she was one. Before we found Maya, 

Evelyn was the apple of our eye too.” 

After he said that, Mrs. Bennett Sr.’s earlier anger weakened 

slightly. 

Irritated, she unlocked her phone, then locked it again in 

agitation. She looked as if she did not care, yet cared so much 

she could barely stand it. 

“You’re the only one who knows how to spoil that girl. Fine. When she comes back, I won’t hold it against her.”
