My Husband Died Twice And Both Times He Lied Chapter 04

I turned off my phone, my voice flat.

“I’m going to Boston for work.”

Gavin’s expression seemed to ease with relief. Then he saw the ring and the container on the table, and displeasure crept back onto his face.

“Evelyn, after all the years we spent as husband and wife, can you really bear to let go?”

The words sounded so absurd that I could not help asking, “And what if I can’t? Gavin, didn’t you fall for someone else anyway?”

It was as if I had hit a nerve. For the first time in a long while, he said nothing.

He only opened the container.

The moment he saw the embryo curled inside, his heart seemed to stop.

Even his voice turned hoarse and unsteady.

“What… what is this?”

I wanted so badly to tell him it was his unborn child. But before the words could leave my mouth, Maya shoved the door open in a panic.

“Evelyn! Why are you here? Isn’t Chase Collins waiting for you downstairs?”

I frowned, and Gavin’s face darkened.

“Who is Chase Collins?”

Maya glanced at me quickly, then stammered, “Chase is Evelyn’s boyfriend…”

The moment I heard her say that, my eyes snapped up.

Maya seized the chance and pointed at the container, crying out in surprise, “Evelyn, isn’t that your baby with Chase? Why are you showing it to Gavin?”

Gavin’s expression turned terrifyingly dark in an instant.

Through gritted teeth, he said each word slowly. “Evelyn, you had a child with another man?”

My breath caught. Anger crashed through my chest.

“Gavin, this is your child.”

He looked as if he had just heard a joke. His mouth twisted as he kept shaking his head.

“Evelyn. In just three years, you found another man and even had a baby with him?”

“Was it such a hardship when I asked you to stay child-free with me back then?”

Maya pretended to panic.

“I’m sorry, Evelyn. I didn’t know you hadn’t told Gavin about your miscarriage…”

Gavin’s words chilled me to the bone, and a layer of cold sweat broke out across my back.

“Gavin, I told you. This is your child.”

“You didn’t know. After you died three years ago, I found out I was pregnant…”

A deafening crash rang in my ears.

My pupils widened little by little.

Gavin had thrown the embryo container straight out the window, and it fell into a biohazard trash bin.

It felt as if my heart had been smashed to pieces. I ran to the window, nearly breaking down.

He was still laughing through clenched teeth.

“Isn’t your man downstairs? Tell him to pick it up.”

Those words burned away the last of my sanity. I rushed toward him in a few strides and slapped him across the face, my voice breaking on every word.

“Gavin, how can you be this cruel? It’s your child!”

He turned his head away and shielded Maya tightly in his arms, his voice cold as ice.

“My child was just born. Don’t disgust me with some bastard.”

“Maya still needs to recover after giving birth. You and your new boyfriend had better stay the hell away from us.”

With that, the two of them left. I stumbled and rushed downstairs.

But it was too late.

The sanitation worker had already emptied the trash bin into the garbage truck.

I screamed and sobbed as I chased after the truck.

In the end, all I could do was watch helplessly as it drove away.

Maya deliberately sent me a message.

Maya: [Evelyn, you stole my life for so many years. I’m only taking it back.]

Maya: [Oh, and you still don’t know, do you? I paid someone to trigger that avalanche three years ago.]

I stared at that message.

My whole body shook violently with rage.

So she had killed my child too.
