Nolan didn’t expect me to react so strongly. He actually stumbled back a step.

He looked hurt and embarrassed. He dropped his head, holding it in his hands. “I won’t touch you again. I

know I hurt you. But Sierra is dying.”

“You know she is. She’s had such a hard life. She’s barely had a good day in her life.”

He looked back up at me. “She wasted seven years of her youth on me, and now she’s dying. I can’t just do

nothing. I can’t watch her suffer.”

“Isn’t a person’s life more important than our engagement party?”

He sounded like he was questioning me.

My parents were about to explode.

Mr. Hartley gave Nolan a sharp knock. “Shut up. This isn’t about the engagement party. Who cares about

Sierra Vance? What matters is Elara.”

“That’s not fair, Dad. Sierra has cancer. She’s given me so much.” Nolan argued back.

I was getting annoyed. I didn’t care about the engagement party or who was more important. I just didn’t like

some strange man touching my hand.

“Stop yelling. I don’t want to see you. Please leave.” I exhaled and gestured for him to leave.

My parents told him to get out too.

Nolan pressed his lips together and slowly stood up.

“Elara, I still hope you can be rational. Sierra has suffered so much. While we’ve had happiness, she’s had

none of it.”

“You can pretend to have amnesia. You can hate me. Fine. But please show Sierra some understanding.”

I stared at him, completely lost.

What was he even talking about?

“Sorry, but I really don’t know you. As for Sierra Vance, I think she used to be my freshman mentee in

college.”

“She has had a rough life. You should take care of her. Treat her well. I wish you both the best.”

I genuinely hoped they would be happy together.

Nolan sighed again. “I’ll come back when you’re done being mad.”

He turned and left, ignoring Hailey’s yelling and his parents trying to stop him.
