Of course I was okay. What could be wrong?

Was there something wrong with my phone? Or the pastries?

“I’m fine. Everything’s great. This is pretty funny, actually.” I really did think the whole Nolan situation was amusing. So dramatic.

Everyone just stared at each other.

My parents were upset and worried something might be wrong with me. They had the hospital run more tests.

Everything came back normal again.

But everyone still thought something was off.

Mr. Hartley didn’t say another word. He stormed off to find Nolan.

On the third day, he brought Nolan back.

My parents, Mrs. Hartley, and Hailey were all there.

Nolan walked in and looked straight at me, guilt and concern on his face.

“Elara, are you okay? I wanted to come sooner, but Sierra just got out of the hospital. She’s in bad shape. I had to get her settled first.” He sat down next to me to apologize.

I stared at him.

I had to admit, this stranger was handsome.

He was tall, well-built, with a strong jaw and bright eyes. It would be hard to call him unattractive.

“Mr. and Mrs. Hartley, when did you get a son? He’s not bad-looking at all.” I gave him a compliment.

Nolan froze. He frowned and reached for my hand. “Elara, it’s me, Nolan. We grew up together. Don’t say stuff like that…”

Before he could finish, I pulled my hand back on instinct, frowning.

Who did he think he was? Why was he touching my hand?

Nolan froze again. Then he looked down and smiled bitterly. “My dad said you lost your memory, but I know you’re pretending. You hate me. I’m sorry, Elara. It’s my fault. Just let me explain…”

He reached for my hand again.

I frowned even harder and yanked my hand away. “What are you doing? Don’t touch me.”
