I woke up in the hospital to my parents’ worried faces.

There were also some relatives in the room, along with our kind neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Hartley.

When my parents saw I was awake, they cried with relief.

Mr. Hartley gritted his teeth and said, “Elara, you’re finally awake. Nolan has lost his mind. I’ll make him answer for this!”

“That’s right, Elara, don’t take it to heart. We’ll deal with him, I promise.” Mrs. Hartley’s eyes were red as she assured me they would deal with Nolan.

I just stared blankly, my mind was blank.

Nolan Hartley… who was that?

Weren’t the Hartleys supposed to have only a daughter? Since when did they have a son?

When my parents saw me spacing out, they got nervous again, checking my forehead, holding my hands.

My mom started crying, both angry and hurt. “That Nolan has ruined my daughter. After all these years together, he just walked out on her engagement party.”

Mr. Hartley sighed. “I’m so sorry. I sent Hailey to find him. We’ll get to the bottom of this. My family will make this right.”

I blinked and asked hesitantly, “Um… who is Nolan Hartley?”

The whole room went silent.

My mom panicked, touching my head again and calling for the doctor.

The doctor came and ran more tests. Everything came back normal, physically, I was perfectly fine. I was cleared to leave anytime.

I just didn’t remember how I ended up in the hospital. It seemed I had lost part of my memory.

In the end, the doctor suggested I stay for three days of observation.

My parents and the Hartleys refused to leave for those three days.

They ate and slept at the hospital, taking turns watching over me.

I felt bad. My own parents were one thing, but the Hartleys were going above and beyond. It made me uncomfortable.

I told them to go home, that I was fine.

Mr. and Mrs. Hartley looked at each other, their expressions strange.

“Elara, did you really forget Nolan? You’re our daughter-in-law. Of course we should take care of you.” Mrs. Hartley didn’t like how distant I was being.

I let out a confused laugh. “Who is Nolan Hartley? I’m not his wife, am I?”

“You were about to be engaged. Something unexpected happened…” Mr. Hartley took the chance to tell me about my history with Nolan.

He talked about the engagement party and then about our childhood. Walking the dog together, climbing trees.

“When you were seven, our families went to the beach. You got swept away by a wave, and Nolan jumped in after you without thinking. If it weren’t for the lifeguard, you both might not have made it…”

Mr. Hartley watched my face as he spoke, hoping I would remember.

I gave him a dry smile. I didn’t remember that. Not at all.

Mr. Hartley got anxious. Mrs. Hartley sighed. “Maybe you’re just too upset and forgot for now. Rest well, dear. Don’t be too angry.”

I wasn’t angry, though. I didn’t even know who Nolan was. What was there to be angry about?
