My Husband’s Gold Digger Test Cost Him His Wife and Son Chapter 01

My Husband’s Gold Digger Test Cost Him His Wife and Son Chapter 01

“You say you love me, but how am I supposed to know you’re not a gold digger?”

“For the next three years, I won’t give you a cent. Prove it to me.”

I had never wanted Ethan Whitmore’s money. So, stubborn as I was, I tried to prove it.

For three whole years, I delivered food in 104-degree heat, worked three jobs, and even skipped the epidural when I gave birth to Noah just to save a few dollars.

Then, on our wedding anniversary, Noah got bullied by Vanessa Lane’s son because he was poor.

That boy stood tucked safely behind Ethan, clean-faced and soft-clothed, dressed head to toe in designer labels.

And worst of all, Ethan was standing right there, backing him up without even asking what had happened.

Noah, meanwhile, was curled up in my arms, bruised and trembling, like a wounded little kitten.

That was the moment everything inside me went quiet.

“Today is the last day, Ethan. I want a divorce.”

Ethan stared at me for a long, silent second.

Then he let out a low, mocking laugh.

“A divorce? You’d actually walk away?”

“You suffered through three years of this, and tomorrow, you officially become the Whitmore Donna. Two million dollars a month in allowance, a life most women would kill for, and you’re throwing it away?”

“Over something this small?”

I ignored him and lowered my head, gently blowing on Noah’s scraped skin.

He had been shoved to the ground. His knees and arms were raw and red, the large patches of iodine I had just applied only made the injuries look more horrific.

Noah did not cry.

He only held back his tears, as if he had already grown accustomed to such injustice.

My chest ached just looking at him.

When I looked up and saw the little culprit still hiding behind Ethan, the anger I had buried for three years finally broke loose.

“This is not small. We both saw the security cameras just now! Your own son was hurt, and instead of standing up for him, you protected someone else’s child. Ethan, do you even have a heart?”

I rarely lost my temper.

The sudden force of my anger made even Ethan freeze.

The air went tight in an instant.

Of course, that was when Vanessa stepped in to smooth things over.

“They’re children. They don’t know any better. Ryan already knows he was wrong, and I’ll apologize to Noah for him.”

“Emma, please don’t be angry.”

I looked at Ryan, whose hand she was holding.

The boy was still making faces at us, without a single shred of remorse.

My face stayed cold.

“He made the mistake. He can apologize for himself. You’re his mother, not his mouthpiece.”

Vanessa had always been good at playing fragile.

The moment I pushed back, her mouth trembled, and tears welled in her eyes.

She turned to Ethan.

“Ethan…”

Ethan had already been burning with frustration after I yelled at him. Now, seeing Vanessa cry, his expression darkened even more.

He snapped at me, “Enough. Kids roughhouse. It’s normal for them to get some scrapes. Why are you bullying a child?”

“And Vanessa already apologized. Don’t push it.”

Before I could argue back, Noah spoke from my arms.

“Daddy, why do you always help Ryan?”

“You saw it. Ryan called Mommy names first. I couldn’t stand it, so I tried to find the teacher. Then he got mad and pushed me. I didn’t even hit him back.”

“Daddy… do you not love me at all?”

The childish disappointment in his eyes made Ethan’s face stiffen.

He instinctively stepped forward, as if he wanted to comfort him, but Ryan grabbed his leg from behind.

“You’re only figuring that out now?”

“Our whole class knows Uncle Ethan doesn’t like his little beggar son. My mom said your mom is a beggar, and you’re a little beggar too. Poor people like you don’t even deserve to go to the same elite private school as me.”

“One day, you and your mom will get kicked out of the Whitmore family, and then me and my mom can move in and live the good life…”

Before Ryan could finish, Vanessa slapped the back of his head.

“Ryan! What is wrong with you? Apologize to Noah right now!”

Ryan opened his mouth, ready to throw a screaming fit.

Vanessa shot him a look, and only then did he walk toward us, teary-eyed and resentful.

Between sniffles, he said, “Noah, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have pushed you, and I shouldn’t have made fun of you and your mom.”

Noah glanced at him and whispered, “It’s okay.”

Then he buried himself back in my arms, his voice muffled.

“Mommy, I don’t want to go to school here anymore.”

“The tuition is really expensive. Daddy doesn’t pay for it, and you have to work so hard. The kids here don’t like me either.”

His words nearly crushed my soul.

I stroked his hair and comforted him softly.

“Okay. Then we won’t stay here. I’ll transfer you to another school.”

The bell rang.

The farce finally ended, and the teacher took both children back to class.

Maybe Noah’s words had stirred a rare bit of belated warmth in Ethan, because before leaving, he offered to drive me.

“Don’t take the bus. It’s too hot out. I’ll take you.”

He leaned out of a multi-million-dollar supercar.

In the past, I would have refused.

I would have stood under the burning sun and waited for the bus just to prove to Ethan that I was not a gold digger.

But then I looked down at myself.

I was still wearing my faded delivery uniform. Then I thought of Noah’s washed-out sneakers, so old the color had nearly vanished.

Vanessa, sitting in the passenger seat, looked polished and beautiful. Ryan was dressed in luxury brands from head to toe.

And just like that, the breath I had been holding in my chest for three years finally dissolved.

Ethan, proving myself did not matter anymore.

Whether you loved us was the only thing that did.

I opened the car door and, for the first time ever, got in.

Ethan lifted his brows in surprise, then let out a soft laugh.

“Done pretending you’re tough?”

“I knew it. The three years are up, and tomorrow you finally get your two-million-dollar monthly allowance. How could you possibly bear to leave me for real?”

“Fine. Where am I taking you?”

I looked at him calmly.

“To the courthouse.”

“We’re filing for divorce.”
