My Fiancé Married My Best Friend Chapter 08

My Fiancé Married My Best Friend Chapter 08

A pair of arms wrapping around me from behind pulled me out of the memory. “Why are you crying?” Xavier’s voice rumbled low in my ear.

“I’m not crying,” I muttered, wiping my cheeks.

He turned me gently. His thumb brushed the tears from my face. His tenderness shattered me completely. I

sobbed.

That night, I sent my formal resignation email to Liam’s company. Copied HR. Copied my entire team.

My phone rang within minutes. Liam. I declined. He called again. And again. I blocked his number.

The texts flooded in.

*Nina, please, don’t do this. Give me a chance.*

*Nina, I don’t care that you married him. I don’t care about anything. I just want you back.*

*My marriage to Chloe was invalid. We’re even now. We can start over.*

Shameless.

He actually thought he still had a chance.

I blocked him everywhere.

He found the penthouse address. He was waiting for me by the private elevator when I stepped out. He

looked haggard. Suit rumpled.

“Nina. What am I supposed to do?” His voice was hoarse. “You can’t leave the company. We built it together. I

can’t do this without you!”

He stepped forward and grabbed my wrist. “I know you still love me. This is your way of punishing me. And

it’s working! Hit me! Curse at me!” He seized my hand and forced me to slap his own face. The sound was sharp and pathetic. “I’m a bastard! I deserve it! Just come home!”

I wrenched free and shoved him back. “Enough! It’s over, Liam! I’m not coming back. Not to you. Not to the

company.”

The desperation in his eyes thickened into something darker. Something more resolute. He straightened his

jacket. His jaw tightened. “Fine. You’ll see, Nina. You’ll see that I’m serious.”

Three days later, my phone rang from a number I hadn’t blocked. Chloe. Her voice was a thin wire. “Nina…

can you come? To the hospital? Please.”

I went.

She lay in the hospital bed. Fragile. The light already gone from her eyes. The soft swell of her belly was

gone.

“He wants a divorce. Right now. He can’t wait another second…” She whispered. Her gaze was fixed on the

wall. “We fight. All the time. He said… he said the baby was an accident. A burden. He said he loves you. He said he needs you back.” A tear slid down her cheek. “He pushed me. During a fight. I fell.”

I looked at her. This woman who’d been my anchor and my executioner. The betrayal still burned like an

electric current through me. But seeing her like this… there was only hollow ache.

“Chloe,” I said quietly. “We’re not friends anymore. We’re nothing.”

She closed her eyes. More tears spilled out. “I know. I’m sorry, Nina.”

I walked out. Didn’t look back.
