Not long after that, I was driving home when I heard the radio announcer say, “In three days, there will be a seven-star conjunction. It only happens once every seven years.”

My hands tightened on the steering wheel.

A seven-star conjunction.

I remembered that five years ago, when I switched bodies with Charlotte, it happened during one.

But I thought about it for a second and dismissed it.

There was no way I would get that lucky twice in one lifetime.

But when I got home from work that day, Christopher suddenly ran over and pulled me into his arms. “Emily, I figured out how to travel back in time!”

I looked up and met his gaze calmly. “Really?”

He said he had asked his contacts and spent hundreds of millions of dollars to collect all three rune stones. With the seven-star conjunction, he could make the transfer happen.

But it would only work once, and it would switch their physical bodies.

“This time I’ll finally get to see the real Charlotte, the way she really looks.”

Christopher’s voice was full of excitement.

And I found myself thinking, William’s face appeared in my mind.

My heart started racing.

Was it really going to happen?

I thought back to the last time I saw William: the rebel militia was attacking the city, and he used his own body to protect me and get me out.

Then he found the court mage to help switch me back.

His hands were covered in blood, but he was still smiling at me. “Emily, your world is peaceful. There’s no war there. So I’m sending you back.”

“Don’t come here again.”

In that world, a tear rolled down my cheek.

I had grown up in the 21st century. Even after five years in the Kingdom of Eldoria, I kept telling myself it was just a movie set, and that William was just an actor.

But in that moment, William risked his life to save me, and it shook me to my core.

Before the transfer, I thought I loved Christopher.

But after experiencing a goodbye like that, and the kind of love William gave me, the man in front of me felt meaningless.

Since Christopher wanted to switch back with Charlotte, I would play along.

Because he wasn’t the only one who wanted to travel back in time to find someone.

Christopher made his preparations excitedly, counting down the days until Charlotte’s arrival.

But I just watched him quietly and asked one question. “Charlotte will come back in her own body this time. Christopher, will you still accept her if she doesn’t look like me?”

I looked in the mirror and touched my own face.

I had worn Charlotte’s face for five years and knew it better than anyone.

This time, it would be a complete transfer.

That meant we would each end up in our own original bodies in the other world.

When Christopher heard this, he lifted his chin and smiled. “I’m not scared. Charlotte is so lively and adorable. No matter what face she has, I’ll love her.”

I nodded and didn’t say anything else.

Three days later, the day of the seven-star conjunction arrived.

Early in the morning, Christopher took me to the place where the three rune stones were stored.

He even considerately helped me change into ancient-style clothes.

“Emily, you’re still my wife. I wouldn’t make you suffer.”

“You’ll just have to go to Eldoria for a few days. You’ve already lived there for five years. You’re used to it, right?”

“I promise once I’ve seen Charlotte, you can ask anything of me.”

I looked down and shook my head. “I don’t want anything.”

Christopher let out a breath of relief. Just then, someone shouted, “The seven-star conjunction!”

Christopher got excited right away and hurried to activate the three rune stones.

A flash of golden light appeared. Wind howled from every direction.

Christopher squinted against the wind and tried to look at me. “Emily, take care of yourself. Have a safe trip.”

I pressed my lips together. “Christopher… I won’t be seeing you again.”

The moment the words left my mouth, a beam of light flashed, and I disappeared.

Christopher looked up. “What… what did you say?”

At the same time, another beam of light delivered a strange woman in ancient clothes.

“Where am I?” The woman lowered her wide sleeves and looked around in confusion as Christopher stepped forward eagerly.

But the first thing he saw was her face covered in freckles.

He froze and his smile faded.

Then he turned and looked behind her uncertainly.

“Are you the duchess’s maid? Where’s my Charlotte? She’s a duchess. Have you seen her?”

The freckled girl blinked and pointed at herself.

“Christopher, don’t you recognize me? I’m Charlotte.”
