He Loves The Ancient Soul In My Body Chapter 03

But it was too dark for him to see me nod in agreement.

“Okay. I’ll support you anyway,” I whispered it to myself.

Christopher and I had been married for five years. Before Charlotte came along, he truly loved me with all his heart.

So when I got into the car accident and crossed over, when I was lying in the hospital, Christopher was genuinely panicked. He even thought about ending his life alongside mine.

But then Charlotte appeared in my body, wearing my face and living my life.

By the time we returned to our rightful selves, Christopher just looked at me with disappointment and asked, “You’re back. What about her?”

So it wasn’t surprising that even with Emily back by his side, Christopher still had framed photos of Charlotte hanging in his study, and he touched them every day.

Even though she had the same face as mine, that didn’t ease the bitterness in his chest.

About two months passed this way.

One weekend afternoon, a guest came over.

It was his college friend, Jason Miller. I smiled, let Jason inside, and brought out some fruit and poured tea.

Christopher sat on the couch in a good mood, clinking glasses with Jason as they talked about embarrassing stories from their college days.

I was in the kitchen making dinner, and listening to them laugh in the living room, I almost felt like things had gone back to the way they were.

“Emily, stop working so hard. Come sit with us.” Jason called out.

I dried my hands and walked over.

The moment I sat down, Jason threw his arm around Christopher’s shoulder and said, “You guys didn’t know this, but this guy almost made a huge breakthrough last year.”

“What kind of breakthrough?” I asked.

Christopher’s face changed, and he grabbed Jason’s wrist. “Jason!”

But Jason had already let it slip.

“He spent two hundred million on some ancient ceremonial stone disc last month. That wouldn’t have been a big deal, except the disc turned out to be a stolen national treasure.”

“It led to a whole ring of artifact smugglers. He almost recovered a priceless relic. Unfortunately, someone swapped the disc out. The trail went cold.”

The room fell silent.

I looked at Christopher. He dropped his gaze and downed his drink in one gulp.

I paused, then asked, “What happened after that?”

“He didn’t tell me the rest.” Jason scratched his head. “But I heard around that time he was looking for something…”

“It was strange. He’d been teaching history his whole life. He used to say artifacts were all a scam. Then suddenly he became obsessed with them and took a class on relic authentication.”

“Anyone would think he’d lost his mind.”

After Jason left, we didn’t say a word.

Christopher sat on the rooftop, smoking one cigarette after another.

I cleaned up the dishes, wiped down the kitchen, and walked outside.

I leaned against the doorframe. “So those artifacts weren’t just artifacts, were they?”

He didn’t deny it.

“Was that disc related to time travel?”

Christopher’s cigarette glowed in the dark. After a moment, he said in a hoarse voice, “The symbols carved into that disc matched exactly what I read in an ancient text.”

“The text said there was a rune master in the Pre-Imperial Era who mastered the secret art of opening the reincarnation cycle. His tools were a set of three ancient rune stones.”

“Three stones combined could rewrite fate.”

He flicked the ash off his cigarette. “I almost collected all of them.”

I didn’t ask what happened next.

Since he failed, the disc was either confiscated or lost forever.

But for me, something else mattered more.

“You were willing to mess with a national treasure just to travel back to her?” I asked quietly.

He was silent for a long time.

“It wasn’t for me to travel back. It was to make you and Charlotte switch places again.”

The moon disappeared behind the clouds, and the rooftop grew dark.

The only light was the small glow of the cigarette between his fingers, flickering on and off.

“I’m sorry,” He said, keeping his head down. “I wish I could forget those five years and just live a good life with you. But I can’t.”

“I think about Charlotte. I think about her leaning on my shoulder, acting cute. I think about the way her eyes lit up when she turned on the refrigerator or the air conditioner for the first time…”

“Without her, I don’t know what reason I have to go on living.”

He suddenly grabbed my shoulders. His expression looked desperate, like a man drinking poison to ease his pain.

“I just want to try. Even if there’s only a tiny chance. Just one more time. One more switch. Okay?”

“Emily, you understand, don’t you?”

I was quiet for a long time. Then I nodded. “I understand.”

Because ever since I came back, I had been trying my hardest to convince myself to forget the past and treat my time in the ancient world like a dream.

Every day, I tried to treat Christopher well.

But really, I was just reminding myself not to cross the line.

Not to think about those five years that felt so unreal. Not to think about William.

But since Christopher was so determined to switch me back with Charlotte, I would give him what he wanted.
